Read moreA iconic, historical café, offering an overall mediocre, and sometimes frustrating, experience. The food is consistently good, and comes reasonably priced, although sitting at the terrace means paying extra for each thing you buy, a policy that makes little sense to me and most people (if you run the place and rent the terrace space from the municipality, you are already getting the corresponding competitive benefit - charging your clients extra for it is, to say the least, disingenuous).
The decor is traditional and tasteful though it could definitely use some touching up.
But the most important thing by far is the service, which is unfortunately mediocre at best, and quite disappointing most of the time. Most servers look either really bored with their work or even annoyed by it. They are often rushed, stressed or just distracted and sometimes treat you as if they are doing you a favor when serving you or you are the cause of their misery ( nstead of their boss or their work conditions). There are definitely exceptions, but most of the time the client will be left feeling that their patronage is not appreciated at all. Above everything, the "es lo que hay" ("it is what it is") culture that seems to be an issue in Northern Spain reigns...
Read moreMay 2023 Our tour group of 40 had tapas and sangria here. Excellent food and drinks was the overall concensus. They were ready for us as this outing was prearranged. Service was fast, the food was delicious, and the sangria was amazing. The best sangria I have ever had. Apparently, lemonade and cinnamon are the secret ingredients. A large room filled with many tables, noisy because of so many people chatting. I loved it! Lots of atmosphere, and filled with tourists, and locals who probably are regulars. Quite eclectic. If we had time, I would have stayed longer to soak up the atmosphere, and the interior architecture. I felt like I was in a movie. This 1888 restaurant is located in the Plaza del Castillo. This main plaza in Pamplona has a history because of the Running of the Bulls. Apparently Ernest Hemingway used to hang out here when he visited for the San Fermin festival. I am not easily wowed by a place such as this because of why it is famous, but this place, I definitely was. So beautiful inside. There is also a large patio outside for the summer tourist season. This place must be insanely busy when the city expands from 200,000 to 1 million in July during the San...
