Mixed Experience: Excellent Food and Service Upstairs, but a Disappointing First Impression

While the food and service on the second floor were good, I feel compelled to share my poor first impression of the restaurant.

When my parents, my spouse, and I arrived, there were about 4-5 groups enjoying tapas on the ground floor. We stood at the entrance, expecting to be greeted, but despite making eye contact with both the manager (or someone who seemed in charge) and a waitress, no one acknowledged us.

The entrance is a glass door, so we stepped outside to avoid blocking it and waited for about five minutes. It was clear they noticed us, yet we received no attention. We tried to remain patient, thinking there might be rules or that they were exceptionally busy, but neither seemed to be the case. This lack of engagement left us feeling unwelcome and confused.

I couldn’t help but notice the lack of basic courtesy here. After waiting in vain, I re-entered the restaurant alone to seek clarification. Thankfully, the owner emerged from the kitchen and welcomed us. He explained that we could choose between dining upstairs or staying on the ground floor for tapas. Thanks to his assistance, we were seated upstairs.

Once upstairs, our experience improved significantly. The food, house wine, and the waiter’s kind recommendations made for a lovely meal. However, I couldn’t fully enjoy it, as I kept reflecting on our cold reception at the door.

For fellow Korean or American tourists visiting Ronda, I would note that this restaurant seems to prioritize locals, which could make international visitors feel...

We came to visit Ronda for just a day and a night, didn't really plan where to go to eat but had a walk around the area and came across Carerra Oficial which looked bright and welcoming.

The menu looked great for tapas and other options but we we were intrigued by the tasting menu which was a very reasonable price of €40 per person, food and service were lovely. Five courses plus dessert.

We didn't see the tasting menu details beforehand which was fine, that's part of the experience but there was a plate of delicious clams in sauce that I couldn't eat, I have a bivalve intolerance so ate around them but the chef was attentive enough to come out afterwards to just let him know if there was something we couldn't eat. In hindsight I would have mentioned this at the time.

Every meal was fresh, tasty and looked great. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would not hesitate to...

Honestly not sure what to make out of the other reviews. Maybe they were bought on the darkweb, maybe people have no taste, but anyway here is my experience. First, the bread was a stale version of your average school canteen bread, but from the previous day. Then there were two anchovy tapas, which were basically canned anchovy on a cracker with a piece of tastless tomato. We also had tuna, again canned tuna on a cracker. We had octopus, which was almost decent (but not quite, and twice the price of the rest) and clam spinach (which tastes like spinachs with a lot of cream, didn't taste the clam). I honestly have no idea how they managed to get their 4.8 stars and people claiming it is "as good as Michelin stars restaurants", but it will remain an inspiration for me. Fake it until you make it, as they say.
