Visited Meloneras on a cloudy day of our holiday, decided on an Italian meal for lunch, found Grand Italia and were seated at a table for 2 by a disinterested front of house waiter. Not a good start, given a table that was the worst in the seating area, with an obscured view of the sea and seemed to be crammed in, along with all the other tables in the restaurant, all very close together. The table was not very clean and there were a mountain of menus, along with condiments, all on the tiny table. Asked if we wanted drinks after about 5 minutes and they came quickly, but 4 glasses and 4 bottles filled the table, so we emptied our bottles into the glasses and put them on the end of the table to show they were empty, these weren't removed for a long while, so our table was very cramped all through the meal. Extensive menu with nothing exciting catching the eye, hardly any vegetarian options and none marked on the menu as such (V). I am not a strict vegetarian but I prefer this above meat dishes generally. There was so little choice on the huge menu, that I opted for a pizza (which is not something I would normally chose), I asked if the vegetable pizza could be made into a Calzone with extra mushrooms and no parmesan (the menu just stated 'mixed vegetables' as the topping) the waiter said ok and off he went, with my husband having ordered the only Calzone option on the menu (meat). When our meals arrived my husband got a Calzone as ordered and I received a vegetable pizza open with no mushrooms and I could definitely taste a parmesan type cheese (something I detest and makes me physically ill), not what I asked for in any way. I folded the pizza the make it more palatable as the smell was terrible, but unfortunately it tasted as bad as it looked and smelled, it was almost tasteless except the terrible cheese, I added Pepper to cover the taste but this didn't help. I ate only one slice (as I was hungry) and basically just ate part of the base with the topping scrapped off. Quite possibly the worst pizza I have ever had. Priced at €18.90 plus 7% taxes, it was most definitely just over-priced bad fast food. My husband on the other hand, enjoyed his Calzone. The young, blone-haired drinks waiter saved what would have been a very bad restaurant experience, as he was pleasant and hard working. The fish dishes served to other diners smelled terrible and 'off', there looked to be a few displeased diners around us too, with some having to ask to have their orders taken. The matre'd was aloof and snobby with British diners but quite pleasant to European diners, says it all really. I do feel that they were more attentive to diners who were drinking alcohol (we ordered non-alcoholic beverages) and anyone ordering high value dishes, we only ordered pizza because nothing else appealed. 3 non-alcoholic lagers, 1 very small Sprite, a bottle of water for the table, 2 very small coffees and 2 pizzas cost €79 including taxes (which, incidentally, you need to add to the shown menu prices). I don't mind paying this for a good meal, but this was most definitely NOT good food. We won't be returning and do not recommend this place, spend your money somewhere that will appreciate your...
Read moreFOOD 3/5 Completely average food, not good, not bad. The menu was incredibly overwhelming with over 150 dishes that were just pasta, some of which were either very bad translations or just total wild cards (see banana stuffed pasta for a main and surprise English soup for pudding). I felt they focused on trying to do everything and ended up doing nothing well. Their best dish by far was the pizza l but we all felt slightly disappointed by our meals. I wouldn't recommend the steak. We ordered two different steaks which both came out cold with a side serving of over cooked veg and very average wedges. They did good cocktails and the home made puddings were all nice.
SERVICE 4/5 Lots of servers milling around, service was quick and it was easy to get their attention.
ATMOSPHERE 4/5 We sat outside where there was a lovely view of the sunset. It was a very busy restaurant so there was a lively vibe. Be warned it is not very well protected from the wind so it was a bit chilly in the evening! (We visited in March however so this might not be an issue in summer months).
VALUE FOR MONEY 3/5 Far too expensive for the quality of the food, but you are paying for the view. Most of the mains were between €12-€20 with most sitting around €18.
OVERALL I would not come back here and I would only recommend it if you want drinks with a view (although I'm sure there's plenty of places where you can get this). When we tried to book the day before and the host said he didn't accept bookings and told us to come at 5.50 to ensure we got a table. Needless to say when we arrived they asked us for our booking... We were a party of 10 and for some reason they sat us on separate tables of 6 and 4 claiming covid rules, when as far as I'm aware there are not currently any restrictions on such things in Spain. This put a slightly sour start to things as we were celebrating and we all wanted to...
Read moreAppalling accessibility and inhumane treatment by vile manager left disabled guests feeling unwelcome
My wife and I visited Grand’Italia on the final evening of our holiday. My wife uses a wheelchair, yet on arrival we were forced to struggle down steps with no offer of assistance from any staff member. When we asked for seating, we were herded into a queue like cattle, despite my wife’s evident difficulty in standing. Not once did anyone enquire whether she needed help.
We specifically requested a table with convenient access to the ladies toilets, yet were directed to a cramped corner where my wife would have had to use the men’s facilities. The atmosphere was cold and impersonal: no smiles, no greeting, no genuine welcome. My wife became unwell from the stress and had to take her medication; still, staff made no attempt to check on our wellbeing.
After ordering drinks, we decided to leave and asked twice for the bill—yet had to wait over five minutes before anyone brought it. Seeking to address these serious issues, I asked to speak with the manager. Rather than apologise, he accused me of having “a bad attitude”, brusquely declared “we’re not a hospital” and told us they “didn’t need customers like us”. Was he implying that disabled people—or those with any decency—are unwelcome?
We came hoping for a special night out; instead, we were treated as an inconvenience. The lack of basic respect, compassion and accessibility rendered the experience utterly despicable. The management of this restaurant display no humanity and should be ashamed of themselves. Avoid this place if you value dignity and...
