Valencia's Best Fish!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at La Pepica restaurant during my visit to Valencia, and it truly exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I stepped in, I knew I was in for a treat. The restaurant exudes an authentic charm that makes you feel right at home, and it is evident that this is a family-owned establishment with a passion for serving the freshest and most delightful fish dishes.

First and foremost, the food at La Pepica is simply outstanding. As a self-proclaimed seafood enthusiast, I can confidently say that this is one of the best fish restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of dining in Spain. Every dish was a celebration of the sea's bounty, and I could taste the care and expertise that went into preparing each plate. The flavors were rich and vibrant, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients, and I couldn't get enough of the delightful culinary creations that graced our table.

The restaurant's commitment to using only the finest and freshest ingredients truly shines through in every bite. The fish was succulent and cooked to perfection, melting in my mouth with every forkful. The accompanying sauces and garnishes were thoughtfully paired, elevating the taste of each dish to a whole new level. Whether it was the savory paella bursting with flavors or the delectable grilled fish that left me craving for more, every dish was a culinary masterpiece. The ambiance at La Pepica adds an extra layer of delight to the dining experience. The warm and welcoming atmosphere creates the perfect setting for enjoying a meal with loved ones or even solo. The restaurant's history and tradition are evident in its décor, and you can't help but feel like a part of something special when you dine here.

While the food undoubtedly deserves a resounding five-star rating, I must admit that the service, though commendable, fell slightly short of my expectations. The staff was friendly and attentive, but at times, it seemed they were a bit overwhelmed by the number of diners. However, this minor aspect did not overshadow the culinary excellence that awaited us on our plates.

In summary, La Pepica is a must-visit destination for any seafood lover traveling to Valencia. The remarkable quality of the food surpasses all else, and I am already looking forward to my next visit to savor more of their exquisite dishes. Whether you are a local or a tourist, this restaurant offers an authentic taste of Valencia's culinary heritage, and I assure you that you will leave with a contented heart and a happy palate. I highly recommend La Pepica to anyone seeking an unforgettable dining experience filled with mouthwatering fish dishes, delightful ambiance, and a glimpse into the culinary passion of a family-run restaurant. Bravo to the chefs and staff for their dedication to culinary excellence, and I cannot wait to return to this...

I have dined at this restaurant twice, and today was the second—and definitely the last—time. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The team lead today was very unprofessional, forcing us to accept and pay for food that was delayed by 48 minutes. This experience has significantly damaged the reputation of this 126-year-old establishment. The restaurant's location by the beach might be appealing, and the food and prices aren't necessarily the issue. I found this restaurant online and assumed that, given its long history, it would offer decent service. However, the service here is the worst I've encountered in any European restaurant. I’ve traveled extensively across Europe, visiting more than 1,000 restaurants in the last 20 years, and this experience was by far the most disappointing. It has tarnished the image of the restaurant and negatively impacted my brief visit to Valencia. I read that this restaurant was founded in 1898 and noticed it only has a 4.0 rating. Initially, I didn’t think much of it, but now I see that the rating reflects a serious issue. The food wasn’t significantly better than other Paella restaurants, but it wasn’t terrible either. Today, I returned for the second time, arriving around 21:35 and ordering Paella Valenciana at 21:55. I waited until 22:40 and decided it was too late to eat a full meal, so I asked to pay for the drinks and cancel the Paella order. However, the team lead insisted that the 48-minute delay (the Paella arrived at 22:43) was within the acceptable range, as the menu stated a 45-minute preparation time. I explained that I was traveling with a child and that it was too late for us to eat if the order was delayed, asking to cancel the order and return the next day. He insisted that the timing was "acceptable" and told us we had to pay for the Paella, regardless of whether we ate it. He even mentioned calling security, which felt unnecessary. I didn’t want to escalate the situation, especially because my child was being so patient. Considering the kindness of my 10-year-old child, I tried to eat the food, but the overall experience was ruined by this unprofessional behavior. The same person argued that the menu mentioned Paella might sometimes take more than an hour to prepare. I believe that if the restaurant cannot deliver the food in time, they should inform the customer in advance to see if they’re willing to wait or, if the cooking takes too long, accept the cancellation. I have canceled orders at other restaurants when the delivery time was too long, and this request has always been accepted. But unfortunately, that was not the case here. The Paella we received tonight wasn’t particularly good, especially given the unpleasant interaction with the staff. I urge anyone reading this to consider other options. The food might be okay, but the service leaves much...

The food was nice, as per other reviews, BUT great food can never excuse rude and inconsiderate service! We booked this restaurant on the strength of the reviews, but within 10 minutes of arriving were already considering leaving. Firstly, when we arrived we couldn’t even order our drinks as the waiter kept just walking off half way through ordering. Often it wasn’t even due to someone asking a question (which we could have understood if there was a language barrier) but just half way through a sentence he would just turn and walk away! We were getting increasingly annoyed but eventually we got our drinks. Then there was the challenge over the food. We were a table of 16, all with different tastes and dietary requirements. We had some vegetarian, some who couldn’t eat fish, and others that liked meat. A real mixture, but we had viewed their menu and were all happy with the options on offer. So we tried to explain this to the waiter and order our various dishes. We were then told that out of a table of 16 people we could only order 2 paella’s. That’s it. We asked to speak to a manager, but that didn’t bring about any resolution. I understand in a busy restaurant that they would prefer to cook large paellas for larger groups, as logistically this makes sense. It is however totally impractical when people do not all like the same thing! We argued our case but ended up having to order a vegetarian paella (for vegetarian and individuals who didn’t like fish) and a fish paella for everyone else. This did not go down well with the group as many people didn’t get to have the food they wanted, and missed out on dishes they were really looking forward to. We also highlighted to the waiter while eating the paella that not all the starters we asked for had come out either, and could this be removed from the bill. Yet 5 minutes later the same waiter questioned us and acted confused with his manager when we pointed out he had still charged us for the missing food! We didn’t stay any longer than we had to, and found the whole experience really disappointing. Many of the group were understandably very upset at being forced to order things they didn’t really want, and yet surrounding us were tables of couples happily enjoying paella dishes shared between two. Maybe if we pulled the tables apart and all sat in groups of two then they’d have let us order what we wanted, but as a large group coming in we felt really restricted when if we all walked in individually we would have been treated very differently. I cannot fault the lovely food that I tried, but I could not justify recommending this place for a group booking after...

Our visit to Valencia would have not been complete without trying the Paella a la Valenciana, so after some research we selected La Pepica. We made the right choice: the restaurant has a well deserved reputation for it (as well as for other seafood specialties we saw served, which looked very appetising), they prepare the paella on the spot and serve it in the cooking pan (which helps keeping it hot while you eat it). It takes some time to prepare it (an enjoyable lunch is not a short affair here) and there is a minimum number of servings for it (as they clearly say when you order), understandably so that they can prepare it fresh every time (indeed it is interesting to take a peek at the kitchen, to see how they achieve that). We had a round of appetisers as we waited for the paella, all was excellent. The house white wine they recommended was very good, a Verdejo white called Buenos Dias, and one of us could not help trying also the local Agua de Valencia (calling it "water" is the understatement of the year, as it is a delicious and strong alcoholic cocktail). We had reserved a table on the outside terrace, with a direct view of the beach promenade, it was sheltered from the wind and had some heaters (though mild weather, it is still winter also in Valencia). Service was prompt and cordial, the ambiance was very nice outside (the indoor dining room is quite big, the restaurant gets crowded, no particularly charming atmosphere inside), we had a very nice time. The bill for the three of us was €134 - no service charge was included, so we added a tip. If we come back to Valencia, we will make sure we stop by La Pepica again.
