Chinese Golden Gate — Restaurant in Colombo

I went here with my family on a Monday evening (after 1900). There were only two other customers in the venue. We went here just based on the reviews. A restaurant staff invited us inside from the reception/waiting area. We were seated inside a large room. It had a faint light, blue painting, damp smell, air condition and loads of flies (we asked whether the fan can be turned on but the staff member said that because the air-condition was on, he wont switch-on the fan). There were only two serving staff members. The one who served us was wearing a white shirt. It had yellow sweat stains everywhere that you can imagine and the front button pleat was visibly black. There was a tall old cabinet by the entrance. It hasn't seen some varnish for at least 20 years and plenty of wear. On top of this cabinet there were few small palm sized dishes holding chilli sauce and tomato sauce. Flies rest on these dishes frequently (don't be surprised if you find a fly RIPed in the sauce. We did.). The serving staff member then took a brown hand towel (If it was white, it would be easy to see how often it gets washed), took the plates out of the cabinet and wiped the plates with the towel (made us wonder why they were not washed and what else get done with the same piece of cloth). We asked for water and got three glasses of water. The glasses had oil on the outside surface and plenty of finger prints. We got our food served. There wasn't anything significantly wonderful about the food. We didn't even want to ponder the thought of how the kitchen conditions would be.

In summary, this place do charge the higher mid level of price for this type of food in Colombo. However, neither the standard or the food justify the cost.

Most importantly, you could walk another three minutes and find very busy, reasonably priced and cleaner places where local residents frequent (we did go to two places close by and the experience was much better).

I’m writing this review specially to the management of this restaurant. We ordered a mix rice large portion. At the time of ordering the steward asked us whether adding beef and pork is fine.. we said yes as it’s gonna be a mix rice and since we have no limitations on any meat items.. “We were totally surprised with the rice portion arrived” As it’s just white rice came with very few pieces of only pork and beef….!!! Once I inquired from the steward.. he said that “yes, their mix rice only comes with pork and beef…! It’s a surprise…! Dear Management… If you order any mix fried rice anywhere restaurant in Sri Lanka it comes with all kinds of different meat items. If this is your preparation policy, you all should clearly mentioned in your menu that this mix rice is made only with pork and beef ! Then your clients will not be get fooled ! If you can’t amend your menu at least educate your clients who is ordering your magical mix fried rice only made with...

Today we visited Golden Gate Gate for dinner around 8.20 pm and we had to wait there almost 40 minutes but no one came to get our order. There was only one serving person in charge and he once came to us and left even we say one word of our order. We saw him getting a payment of another customer few minutes later. There were only 3 tables filled at the moment we walked in. But still we did not get served even after 9 pm. Since this already waste too much time we walked out after complaining to cashier. Very unpleasant experience and do not recommend this...
