Dindigul Thalappakatti at Colombo 4
Location : On De Fonseka Road stretch connecting Galle Road
Have a car park which can accommodate about 15 vehicles and in the night should be able to park along De Fonseka Road.
Ambience : 2 floors of seating which can accommodate roughly about 100 people at once. Typical South Indian restaurant vibe; kids crying, screaming and occasionally peeping onto your dish, tumblers clinking, waiters hustling up and down like programmed ants, and some good tamil songs in the background.
Service : Given the crowd, I would say the service is pretty good. All the tables were occupied throughout our stay. And there were people waiting to get seated. Given that crowd, getting the right order to the right table it self is commendable. Felt they do a good efficient job.
If to find fault, would say, one of the curries we ordered came to the table before the starter. The supervisor kinda waiter apologised for it, although we didn’t mind it 🤷♂️
Food : Ordered sweet corn chicken soup and black pepper fried chicken as starters, boneless chicken biriyani and prawn masala curry as mains. Bought Gulan Jamoon to take away.
The sweet corn soup was different to what we expected. Different to the thick-opaque sweet corn soup, this was transparent, had corn and also was sweet! Although it was different, it was good. Would have liked it a bit warmer though.
Got three leg pieces for the black pepper fried chicken dish. Tasted good but it is way too spicy. For someone who likes spicy it can be a heavenly dish but can be the other way round if you can’t stand spicy.
Biriyani was simply brilliant. Not too dry, not too soggy, was on point. There were about 6 to 7, small cubes chicken. Would have been better if there was a bit more.
Prawns in the masala curry were small in size. Had about 10-15 of them. The prawns were well cooked and with the masala tasted pretty good. Not the best of the prawn curries we have had but passable.
Gulab Jamoons were soft and nice. The treacle had some sort of an essence. Minus that it was good.
VFM : Overall a satisfying meal. If you can stand screeching kids and loud noises, and if you have the patience to wait for a seat, this can be a place for a good filling meal.

Read moreThis is my first visit and I went for a dinner on a poya day (14th Aug 2019). Earlier I have had their food take away and was in love with the food. When I called the restaurant on my way, they informed me that they don't take table reservations and serve first come first basis. I reached the restaurant by 8.45 pm and the place was unbelievably crowded. One guy took the reservation in a book and said we have to wait like 5 mins and ultimately we ended up waiting over 40 mins. I have never waited this long at a restaurant ever in my life, to take a table. Place was so noisy and crowded. Though the restaurant ambiance is nice, you barely notice it with the crowd. Finally got a 7 seater table (2 families) upstairs and it was more calm there. For me noise of kids playing YouTube while eating was so annoying. The place had less calmness you expect from a nice restaurant. You see more Muslim majority customers with large families.
We waited so long for the table but as expected food was to die for. It's little over the market rates but amazingly tasty and high in quality since they are using best ingredients imported from India, as I over heard one of the management person explaining to another customer. We ordered several types of biriyani, naan and chiken tikka. Food is little oily but they worth all the wait. I sincerely hope they take better focus in handling the crowd and make the waiting period lesser, or tell the customers the real time period they have to wait instead of saying 5 mins to everything. Upstairs supervisors were very helpful. Wait staff do not understand English much and I barely know Tamil. Hope someone responsible from the restaurant sees this too. I love your food. Please fix these location issues if possible. I really need to visit again and have a better...
Read moreLong awaited visit has been completed today. Thalappakatti restaurant one important iconic place now in Colombo.
Since I have been to this restaurant in Chennai most of the times im not so eager to visit here in the first place as much as the other do, to whom its a new concept. I was so eager to take my family out for meals, that too a delicious, scrumptious and an affordable eating place but a decent restaurant. One solution thalappakatti 😀
Here, we paid a visit, oh god, people are staying in a que. we felt that’s amazing, as I haven’t seen a restaurant in Colombo so crowded. but the staffs were efficient to clear the table to everyone of us.
Apologize for the viewers for not posting the pictures. As it was selfies with families more than the food. On the other side food proposition are as real as the images they expose in the social sites. So trust me it's good joint to walk in.dine in.
Well, now coming to the food part we ordered for 3 portion of thalappakatti boneless mutton biriyani. 01 chicken biriyani. 01 chicken 65 biriyani. 2 portion of mutton sukka. 3 x 2 mutton milagu rasam. 2 lime juice. 1 bottle of water. Cost approx - lkr 8210/- which gives a range of 1500 - 1700 per person which is affordable for a decent food.
It was a great worry to me personally to host any of my friends / business partners to a decent affordable place. As sometimes the food is not good or over priced. But thalappakatti has well balanced it with year decades treatment.
Food was amazing, and tasty. One thing the family was more happy for having a great time having food. That...
