Colombo's culinary scene is ablaze with the arrival of Gini, a high-end outdoor kitchen redefining Sri Lankan cuisine. Gini elevates local ingredients to new heights with fire-based contemporary dishes that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. The ambience is electric, a charming blend of chic and rustic that perfectly complements the innovative menu.
And what an experience it is! We're talking high-end, fire-based wizardry, transforming humble Sri Lankan ingredients into culinary masterpieces. Take the focaccia, for instance. It arrives warm and pillowy, its crust boasting a satisfying char, accompanied by a mushroom butter so rich and earthy, you'll want it to never finish. The tomato and tamarind white fish crudo was a masterclass in balancing sweet, sour, and spicy notes. Then there's the beetroot tartare, a vibrant explosion of colour and flavour that will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about beetroot. Each dish is a revelation, a testament to the chef's creativity and mastery of technique. The deep-fried prawn sausage? Forget everything you know about those greasy pub staples. This is prawn sausage elevated to an art form, crisp and succulent, with a curry aioli that sings. And the burnt cabbage? Oh, the burnt cabbage! It's a smoky, cheesy, umami bomb that will have you scraping the plate clean.
Let's not forget the cocktails! My tequila concoction, infused with the age-old Sri Lankan technique of Lunu Dahi, was a refreshing twist on tradition.
The grand finale was The Cereal Ice Cream, a playful concoction of caramelized banana, dulce de leche, and biscuit crumb, which is like a childhood dream come true. And another must try is the Orange Mousse. A zesty, refreshing symphony of citrus that provides the perfect ending to this culinary symphony.
Gini is more than just a meal; it's a love letter to Sri Lankan ingredients, a passionate affair orchestrated by charming owners of the establishment who make you feel like friends. If you're in Colombo and looking for an unforgettable dining experience, look no further. Gini is the answer, and it's a 100%...

Read moreHad high hopes for this going in since I was following them on insta for a long time. But it basically turned out to be mediocre food with a high end price tag.
The appetizers were good. But the portion sizes of some were questionable. The squid for example just consisted of a single medium sized stuffed squid.
The mains were the major let down. The portion sizes were seriously questionable for a main. The prawns main consisted of 4 medium sized prawns and 3 small fried string hoppers. The gravy of it was really good. But nothing redeeming in other components. And I think it was the prawns, they had a chemical taste to it, likely from incomplete combustion of gas or whatever they used for grilling. The chicken main consisted of a small chicken leg. Again, it tasted ok, but definitely not enough to justify the price and the size. The lobster main had a small lobster tail and 2 raviolis. Despite the size of the lobster, this was probably the only one acceptable as a main (out of the ones we ordered).
The desserts were good though. And the drinks, disappointing again. Ordered a grape mocktail and could barely taste grape in it. It was mostly lime.
Overall, not the dining experience I thought it would be. There were good bits in the food here and there. But as a whole, it just isn’t worth the price at all. It would work if the food actually tasted as good as they make it look in the pics. The rest of the group were still hungry at the end of the dinner and we ended up going to another...
