When you are wandering around central Gothenburg, your food choices are generally more limited. Many suspicious looking touristy places, higher prices, and just bland, generic designs. Nothing to really stick out. For many years I have brushed off Yubi at Kungstorget as one of those places, but it was finally time to test it.
Located just across Stora Saluhallen, Yubi kind of blends in into the scenery in that area. Certainly no lack of choices. Inside, however, it is quite cutely decorated and has a nice Japanese/Korean fusion touch. Only downside, there is no music at all. At least there wasn’t during my visit. That makes the place kinda eerie and creepy, but all in good fun. The menu is quite extensive with a variety of, they call it, “Asian Tapas”. Smaller sized portions, or simply appetizers/pre-courses. The rest of the menu is rather meat-heavy, sorted by country (Japan/Korea) or type. Fortunately, there is a vegetarian section with a whopping three dishes. A bit of a downer, considering the other menu items.
In any case, it was spring rolls, edamame and bibimbap this time. It arrived quite fast and the bibimbap had a fried egg on top of it as a little surprise. Nothing too problematic for me, a quick swift with chopsticks made the egg go away, but keep in mind to tell them to order without egg should you go for it.
Taste-wise, it’s overall okay. The spring rolls are bad. Typical frozen food with mainly dough and no filling, served with store-bought sweet chili sauce. The bibimbap is alright. It’s difficult to mess up bibimbap, as it’s just a bowl of different ingredients and gochujang sauce. But it was executed well enough that I was happy. Especially the rice was indeed good.
The biggest surprise, however, were the chili edamame. They were coated in a great chili sauce with a fantastic smokey pattern. Good composition and a great snack!
In the end, the price point is acceptable for the location and the food, but apart from the Edamame it was average to below average. If you are too lazy to go to a better place, Yubi will work just fine. But I think that’s the problem in the end. It’s “just fine”.
Yubi Asian Eatery offers Japanese/Korean fusion right in the centre of Gothenburg. Prices are expectedly a tad higher than somewhere more remote, but still acceptable. The menu for vegans is small and offers nothing too impressive. Only the edamame stick out and are quite...
Read moreDelicious! I recommend the place if you ever find yourself in central Gothenburg and want either a smaller snack or a proper meal in the asian fusion style! I got the duck donburi as pictured here but I really loved the sushi. Tastes great and comes in the perfect size👍 It’s a moderately small space but the service is fantastic! Had a super sweet waitress, you’re very well taken care of. The ordering process goes smoothly and I’ve yet to taste anything I...
Read moreFirst visit I tried the Kimchi ramen, the taste was a disappointment, not like I had expected it to be at all. There was hardly any taste of Kimchi at all. Second visit I tried the Chilli beef ramen. The broth was spicy, served with a slice of lime which was a great addition. It was a very enjoyable meal. We bought the Somersby, sparkling rose cider, which I though fit well with the spicy ramen. (The pictures are from the...
