Ah, Teatergrillen! That discreet little temple of gastronomy tucked behind the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, where the ghost of high society past still floats gently over the crisp white tablecloths and murmurs approvingly at the wine list.
Walking in feels rather like slipping into the inner sanctum of a particularly well-upholstered private club—plush burgundy velvet wraps the banquettes like a smoking jacket on a distinguished uncle, and the lighting is set to “confessional but flattering.” One half expects Ingrid Bergman to waft in, or at the very least a monocled count from Östermalm sipping something ruinously expensive.
The staff, immaculately groomed and uncannily attentive, seem to anticipate your desires before you’ve so much as lifted a pinkie. Drop a napkin and a chap appears with a replacement faster than you can say “Arctic char.” Speaking of which—good heavens, the char! It arrives glistening and firm, as if freshly plucked from some enchanted Nordic fjord by a well-mannered troll with a Michelin star.
Carnivores, meanwhile, may prepare to weep tears of joy: the beef options are less menu items and more declarations of faith. Chateaubriand, sirloin, and tenderloin parade forth like Wagnerian heroes—majestic, perfectly seared, and often accompanied by sauces that taste as though someone’s nonna made them after marrying into French aristocracy.
And the wine list—well. Not so much a list as a leather-bound novella of exquisite temptations. Old World, New World, and one suspects, possibly Otherworldly. Whether you fancy a silky Barolo or something more local and mischievous, your sommelier-guide will get you there, likely with a twinkle in the eye and a story to match.
The noise level hovers delightfully just above “confidential diplomatic meeting” and well below “scandalous theatre interval,” which is to say—heavenly. Teatergrillen is old-school luxury of the finest and most civilized order. Not flashy. Not fussy. Just a timeless joy for those who know.

Read moreHad a dinner at this place and I can say that it has a very beautiful interior. I mean, even the toilet had a really nice design😆. However it was a lot more cramped in and small inside than I imagined. People were bumping into each other and the wait staff tried to go around with their trollies to give you a little show while you eat for certain dishes but bumped into guests. It was very loud and quite hard to speak but the food was good overall, they tried to keep it simple french but it felt like they did a lot more effort trying to make the place look nice instead of giving the same thought to the food. Im not saying that the food was bad but it needed a little bit more of a kick. Overall I had a pretty nice dinner and would recommend coming if you don't...
Read moreThis is a special restaurant, everything was perfect. We asked to move table as I'm deaf in one ear and this was done effortlessly. The service from the staff was superb.
I'm Irish and we know great oysters and the best fillet of beef. Here in Sweden I had really beautiful oysters and the very best (flambe) fillet of beef I've ever had. Honestly it was perfection. I'll come back to Stockholm just to eat in this restaurant again. As everywhere in Sweden wine with your dinner is a ridiculous price but in any case the entire dinner was amazing and I was happy to pay for...
