We happened to be staying in Interlaken on a Friday night and we had the oppertunity of attending the Fondue Villa & Garden! We were planning on trying fondue at some point on our Swiss weekend away and we are so glad that we tried it here first!
The Staff: Fondue Villa & Garden is run by Suzanne and Sarah. They operate out of the hostel's kitchen and they are so welcoming! The girls and their staff are all lovely and are very attentive!
Food: We went for a double caquelon which is a fondue pot split in two allowing us to try two flavours. We chose the Traditional Swiss Cheese Fondue and the Creamy Almond Fondue as the two flavours that we wanted to try! They gave us a range of traditional foods to dip into the fondue. We had bread, pickled onions, pickles, pineapple, potatoes, olives and tomatoes. There is something for all to enjoy! I have to say that the vegan creamy almond fondue was really nice! It is a little less sticky when compaired to cheese but still very satisfying! The traditional swiss cheese fondue was oh so cheesy and stringy! What more could you want! I am sure the other flavours are also tasty but if its your first time trying fondue like it was for us, then I recommend keeping it simple with either the traditional swiss cheese or the the vegan creamy almond depending on your dietary needs! It is a little pricey however, it is an all you can eat style restaurant and you definitely will not go home hungry! Highly recommend pairing your meal with the house wine! It was beautiful!
Wheelchair Accessibility: The restaurant operated out of the Adventure Hostel Interlaken and the hostel has wheelchair lifts for the stairs at the main door. The restaurant is spacious and didn't seem cramped and I would think that there is a decent amount of room to maneuver a wheelchair around. As for toilets I am not sure however I know the hostel accepts wheelchair guests so they may have a communal toilet on the ground floor that is also accessible to wheelchairs.
Location: Fondue Villa & Garden is located just a short walk outside the old side of Interlaken and is operated out of the Adventure Hostel Interlaken. I would imagine during the longer Summer days and evenings that the fantastic gardens all to the ambience of this restaurant with thouse wonderful mountain views!
Overall Opinion: Suzanne and Sarah operate a wonderful fondue restaurant out of the Adventure Hostel and I really hope their business flourishes! Fondue Villa & Garden is a great fondue restairant in Interlaken and I highly recommend trying it if you are in the area on a Friday or...
Read moreThis is our first fondue experience outside of the United States. We found the restaurant through a Google search and the rating and recent reviews were very promising. The service rating is based on having to change our reservation from one day to another, only a couple of days before our visit so that we could rearrange our vacation around the weather. They were very hospitable in this sense. We were the first to arrive and be seated and the first to order. We ordered the fondue feast, intending to have cheese fondue, and then the chocolate fondue.
The amount of cheese fondue that they bring is amazing. And it was delicious. And that's when it started to fall apart. Fresh cut peppers and boiled potatoes were the only fresh food for dipping. Jarred cocktail onions, pickles, green and black olives were served in bowls. A bowl of pineapple tidbits from a can were too small to attempt to dip easily. The tiny squares of bread were literally broken (stale?) into sections and put in a basket. We made the most of the experience and nearly finished the massive amount of cheese. Although they set aside two hours and tell you that you have two hours, we finished the cheese fondue in less than half an hour.
They waited about five minutes before bringing us the chocolate fondue. We've had chocolate fondue several times, but I was very excited about steaming liquid chocolate in Switzerland and all of the fruits and sweets that would be delicious with it! And it is with great disappointment that I really do NOT recommend getting the chocolate fondue! It had an odd syrupy texture and was very liquidy even though it was barely warm. We brought it to the attention of one staff member who told us that they couldn't turn on the burner because it would burn and another staff member who took the entire bowl back to the kitchen and brought us a slightly warmer bowl of the same thing. The chocolate fondue was accompanied by the same tiny pineapple bits from a can, packaged marshmallows, several varieties of packaged cookies, stale popcorn, tortilla chips, packaged pretzels, and a small amount of sliced fresh orange pieces and apple pieces. The oranges and apples were good, not great, with the chocolate.
We generally pick restaurants observant of how many locals eat there. We didn't have that opportunity before booking this restaurant and every single group we saw was a...
Read moreWe recently dined over the busy Easter Holiday weekend and didn't realise the restaurant was based out of a hostel. The two of us didn't have a reservation and some space was very kindly made for us. We shared a 6 person table with two others at the opposite end, we didn't mind, but they described the setting as 'intimate'.
Everyone else seemed to have their reservation for 8pm when the place got packed. Two waitresses and a waiter were whizzing about doing an amazing job of taking orders, getting refills and changing fondues. Accomodating all requests from the many patrons and making some small talk when able.
We opted for the Fondue Feast - all you can eat traditional cheese & chocolate fondue. The first fondue came out astonishingly fast, within about 5 minutes of us having ordered. Unfortunately we were underwhelmed by the food and it was not to our particular liking. It may have been the variety of cheese, which my partner descibed as having a Vegemite flavour. We'd probably try a flavoured variant if we were to order again, but this might be a bit of a mask on the standard cheese. We were unable to finish the cheese fondue due to it's 'richness'.
The chocolate fondue was a winner, but I struggle to imagine a world where liquid chocolate isn't delicious.
The sides were pretty standard for the cheese fondue - bread, potatoes, pineapple, bell pepper (capsicum), cocktail onions, pickles, & olives. Nothing outrageous here but we did feel a bit wasteful, not finishing the sides. The waitstaff said they were trying to seek a solution, perhaps offering customers less of the popular options - potatoes, could work. However this is the curse of an all you can eat restaurant.
The sides for the chocolate desert fondue were a touch disappointing. It was 70% biscuits that your grandma tries to palm off to you when you visit - hard. 3 marshmallows and a smattering of fruit orange slices, grapes, razer thin apple slices and the pineapple made a return. As well as a few pretzles for good measure. While the option to get more fruit is available, we were curtailed by the guilt of already having returned the savory sides and leaving many of the crunchy biscuits on the plate.
There was only one toilet available for customers, so it...
