I was there with a friend, for a brunch. Food was therefore not particularly sophisticated (scrambled eggs and pan fried potatoes + bread, butter and jam), it lacked salt, tasted a bit plain- but was well presented. There was a misunderstanding on the names of the menus pronounced very quickly in Swiss German by the restaurant manager when she served us so I took my friend’s plate thinking the scrambled eggs were part of my Volkshaus Zmorge menu. When I finished the eggs I dared to kindly ask if I would get the rest of my menu (which consisted of also jam, butter, fruit salad and birchermüesli) and the unkindness in the response was astonishing: “everything was brought to you, what can I do it now? it’s your fault, how can you confuse the two menus, you should have said it earlier… I will call the manager”. In all this, I was speechless, I did not reply and the waitress escalated it herself… as if I made a complaint. It was a simple question and from her reaction I did not understand we had exchanged our plates. The manager then was sent to our table, eve if I had said it was not needed, and she also was extremely defensive and kept the same line of communication “it’s your fault, how can you have not noticed you had not received what you ordered?”… so even treating us as two idiots. It would have been sufficient to explain with a smile that we had exchanged the plates.
The unkindness was constant from our waitress at every interaction even prior to my question, from the moment I had to ask for the brunch carte, which was not brought to us together with the main restaurant one on a Sunday, typical brunch day!

Read moreWe had a lovely evening with friends, which was no thanks to the restaurant. Volkshaus used to be great before the pandemic but tonight they were obviously having problems. The soup for starter was cold, yet a great fuss was made about how hot the plate was (it was barely warm). All four of us ordered the meatballs for main course. Again, a great fuss was made about hot plates and again they were barely warm. It became clear that the gravy had been added first to the bottom of the plate, then the plate sat under a heating lamp. Whilst waiting for the actual food to be added, the gravy dried and stuck to the plate. The food was put on top- dry meatballs, dry and unseasoned vegetables and potatoes, with no more sauce. It was actually quite miserable. We asked two waiters for more sauce, it did not arrive, we got up to just find some more gravy, were directed between 3 different waiters and then waited another 5 minutes for more gravy. We didn’t complain in the moment, because for us it was very important to not focus on these things else it would have ruined our evening, so honestly we cannot comment on whether the restaurant would have made things right as we did not give them the chance, but the basic standard seemed terrible. Read moreLast night, me and my friend hang out at the bar of this place. We spend around 180chf to 200chf, and the next is to eat at volkhaus restaurant. Since the beginning, blonde staff ( forgot didnt see the name tag) looks underestimate us ( maybe because I am asia) restaurant is not full, but they assigned us to sit at the small table along the pathway. And then not only that, 3 of us ordered the food and want to have bottle of wine, and 1 little girl she doesn't want to eat, just want to drink. The first guy staff said , we are 4 , all of us have to eat ( spoak in swiss german) my friend he is Switzerland and they understand. And for sure the little girl confused, she doesnt want to eat why she have to order. And the next ridiculous, the blonde woman, she came and again mentioned if we are 4 people, and 4 of us have to eat. Or we have to get out from the restaurant. WHAT A CRAZY BEHAVIOR OF THE STAFF?!! This restaurant , if they dont want to loss every single penny , just tell to the guest sitting at this restaurant have to min spend ........ so, the people understand. And me for sure, if I like I am happy to pay. Me, husband, and friend quite often to come to this place. And we promise we will never come to this place again. Specially the woman...
