First off, definitely make reservations. You can still try to go without reservations, but you might have to wait awhile and end up sitting by the toilet. That's what happened to me.
La Caja De Musica is a small Spanish restaurant tucked away in a very quiet alley in Taipei, but is very popular and can get packed!
4/5 Service is very kind, fast and attentive. You're drink will be refilled for you before you even notice you're low. They definitely try to up sell you on drinks to go with your food. It's not the only place in Taipei that does it, but I'll include it in the review. The drink prices are about average for what you'd pay in most Taipei restaurants.
3/5 Honey ribs, as expected, tasted sweet. But was different from the salty and smoky style I'm used to America. It's different, bit still good. The meat fell right off the bones, but the meat wasn't that tender.
3/5 Seafood Paella: The sefood paella at La Caja De Musica is pretty tasty and it's a delicacy in Taipei since not many people serve it. But the actual seafood in it didn't have much taste to it. The seafood was overcooked, but that's understandable since it came out on a sizzling pan. I would have like there to been more of a crispy texture to the paella on the inside of the pan for that extra crunch.
4/5 Ambiance: very welcoming and friendly restaurant with a musical vibe.
2/5 Value: The prices are pretty high and can add up quickly since there is a 10% service charge. There's also a NT$450 minimum charge per person.
3/5 Overall: The price point to food deliciousness for a meal here is pretty high. That creates high barrier for me to return and try other things. My experience wasn't great enough to justify...
Read moreI came here recommended by some Taiwanese friends as a "good value Spanish restaurant" and oh boy, little did they know.
As a Spaniard myself who have tasted several restaurants in Taipei, this is on my list of NOT RECOMMENDED. YASAIYA is still the best one in terms of flavor and taste but since the January 2017 30% price hike, I can no longer recommend it as best value, but it still has a good flavor.
We weren't able to taste their signature paella nor the pork knuckles as we arrived late and they were already out of order.
We ordered the gambas al ajillo, patatas bravas and a salad with some sangria.
The salad was the best part of the menu, pricey but tasty. The shrimps were just okay and the bravas were just not "Spanish bravas." The sangria was okay as well.
I heard from my Taiwanese friends that all servers are "spaniard" or are able to speak Spanish. This is not true, there's a girl from Peru or South America and AFAIK only the cook is Spaniard.
Overall, disappointing and expensive experience.
July 2017 update.
Read moreLast year i been with my friends at La caja de musica, and i have to say that, the best paella i eat was here, so i decide come back this time just myself.
Even i did not had reservation i can sit at the bar, chat with the boss and enjoy the recommendations he suggest me , begin with Gambas al Ajillo, just say, simple delicacy , and because a good Spanish meal isnt complete if no have a good wine , i choose a glass of a fresh white"Alvariño", then some croquetas , wonderful, and some Bravas, that a difference of the 99% of the restaurants, here are fresh potatoes, not frozen , the boss explain me , that all their dishes and sauces are cooked at the restaurant in traditional way. To put a perfect ending , i had the best cheese cake in my life, highly recommended. Cost of the dinner and the experience was totally worthy . Thank you...
