I’ve dined in and ordered takeout from this Morton’s location 30+ times since it opened. It’s consistently really good.
Balcony This is absolutely one of the best features of this location, when the management decides to open it. Over the years it has become less and less often that they will open the balcony for service, which is almost criminal in light of the unrivaled experience anywhere in Taiwan that enjoying a cocktail there provides.
Steak Mortons is a steakhouse. That’s why you should come - to enjoy their steak. Their side dishes and burgers are also quite good, and my dining companions have never had a complaint about the seafood there. It is the best steak available in Taiwan, of the many fine dining restaurants where I’ve tried filet mignon. 20+ very well cooked filets at this location, and 1/20+ that was not a great cut of meat.
Cocktails & Bar The cocktails are good enough not to get in the way. There are cocktail bars that do a better pour. The bar seating is not bad, but it’s a little bit inconvenient to get up to the 45th floor in that building just to go for a couple of cocktails.
Service The service is usually pretty good, prompt. Maybe two or three times out of 30+ the staffing has been a bit shorthanded, and our server was a little harder to flag down then you’d expect at $100-$150 per person.
Atmosphere It’s on the 45th floor and has floor to ceiling glass windows, the views are a major major aspect of the experience. The views from the balcony are unparalleled, but like I said above, it’s a little difficult to get that experience. The only things that bring down the atmosphere are occasionally one or two tables of patrons - sometimes there are selfie monsters who seem to come more for a 90 minute photo shoot performed mostly in silence, than for the experience of dining and savoring a great meal with good conversation. And a couple of times there have been young kids let loose to run around unsupervised, which is totally fine if you’re at Haidilao or Texas Roadhouse or someplace where the noises of kids having fun add to the experience, rather than detracts.
Takeout I love that they offer takeout. For me it’s a tossup between Morten’s and Smith & Wollensky on filet...
Read moreSteakhouse located on the 45th floor in a building within view of the Taipei 101 tower. We arrived fairly late and this was actually a hard place to find but after giving them a phone call it was a bit easier.
This place was absolutely phenomenal. I had informed them that we had come for our anniversary and they prepared the table with minor heart decorations, printed a custom menu with our name on it congratulating us and even did another special thing which I won't mention (I don't want to mention it in case it is up to their discretion if they do it).
We had a steak which was 16oz and lamb cutlets. Both were fantastic, the steak in particular really was one of the best steaks I've had period. Perfect medium rare and the fat was expertly rendered. Lamb cutlets were similarly perfectly cooked, my partner thought they were on the salty side but I didn't think so, thought I'd mention it.
The view is as you'd expect, absolutely fantastic. I made a point to come as late as they would allow because I like night cityscapes and yeah it was a beautiful background to have our dinner with.
The waiter spoke very good english, I gotta give credit, he clearly is well practiced which is great for foreigners like us. Both our waiters gave fantastic service and were very attentive. Do note we were like the last table there (we arrived like 9:45pm and they close the kitchen 10:00pm), so your mileage may vary if they are busy.
Now obviously this place isn't cheap. I would still argue that all things considered, this place is still great value, it's fine dining with an excellent view.
We were the last ones there and I noticed they had actually stayed back an hour past closing for us to finish, which we really appreciate.
We really couldn't have gone to a better place for our last night in Taipei. I'm trying to find anything that they could've possibly done that would've improved our experience any further and can't think of anything. They really were that good. For an excellent fine dining experience with a great view, you need...
Read moreUpdate to below Review: After reading my review, Morton's promptly reached out to get more information to understand the situation, which was very admirable of them. They acknowledged that there had been staffing and steak temperature issues the day of our visit, and made arrangements to make it up to us. We haven't had a chance to go back, but will update the review once we do, hopefully it will be the 5 star experience customers hope for. Thank you for your genuine concern and professionalism in handling the matter! To say we were underwhelmed would be an understatement. The service was non-existent, we weren't even offered a refill on our waters, which were empty about halfway through the meal. The waitress never once came by to see how the food was, and she never cleared our plates until the very end of our 2hr lunch. We ordered our steaks medium, although the waitress gave the standard "it's best to order medium-rare" spiel. I guess they don't really give a shit how you want your steak cooked, because they came out rare-medium-rare anyway. My son had to send his back, as his was particularly rare. Although you shouldn't really have to "saw" a properly cooked center-cut ribeye, the knives were so dull we literally struggled to cut through the steaks. The sides were decent, smoked gouda augraten potatoes, truffle fries, mixed wild mushrooms, crab cakes, and lobster bisque, but it's sad that the sides and the bread were the stars of the meal. I wouldn't ever step foot back in this place, but don't take my word for it, if you'd like to blow several hundred US dollars on a forgettable meal, this location might be a place you'd like to check out. I'm sorry, just because you carry the Mortons name and have a nice view doesn't mean you don't have to put out a...
