My Japanese wife and I had dinner at Sun-Tori for the first -- and last -- time last night. It was awful! The tuna in my tekka maki was not especially fresh and the rice was a little soggy and mushy. The tenpura in my udon was almost unrecognizable -- one piece was definitely ebi, but it tasted a little weird; the other two pieces were mysteries -- I think one was a slice of fish and the other was a tough piece of pork, but I'm really not sure. The noodles were overcooked and mushy. My wife's sushi dinner had the same soggy rice and not very fresh seafood. And at the risk of sounding like I'm piling on, it took almost 30 minutes for the food to be served after we ordered, but there were only five other people in the restaurant besides us.
Last but definitely not least, as we were waiting for our food to arrive, I saw a huge COCKROACH skitter along the wall across the room. And then, just after the food was served, another enormous COCKROACH started crawling up my leg! I brushed it off and stomped on it, but by then my appetite was gone. Cockroaches are not very difficult to eradicate (boric acid is all it takes to get rid of them for a long time) and there is simply no excuse for cockroaches infesting a restaurant.
Again, my wife is native Japanese. We know sushi. Even without the cockroaches we would give this place a one star rating. We cannot account for why so many other reviewers give it high marks. Maybe we just caught them on a bad night -- we were there on a Monday and we understand the owner arrives with a new batch of fish from Sriracha on Friday, so our fish was only three days old and should have been fresher than it seemed to be. I just don't know, but considering the cockroaches, we won't be giving them a second...
Read moreBack again after 2 years!! A humble little shop selling very fresh seafood that come from the Thai Gulf waters. This shop is open only from Saturday to Tuesday lunch time. Not more. That’s because the fanatical owner goes down to the seaport of Rayong to choose the catch of the day himself and drive up to Chiangmai with the fish. Been doing this for years! If u want to eat Sashimi n sushi u need to be at he shop by 11.30am or earlier. If not u have BBQ fish only after 12pm. Dinner is fine but still u need to be there early. Nothing to shout ambience. It’s all about fresh catch of the day. Still a must go if u like fresh Thai seafood...
Read moreIve always had great experiences here, and don't understand any of the complaints. I've eaten here at least 50 times since 2016 and the fish is always fresh (that's why they're closed three days of the week-they go get fish and bring it back), complaints that they're closed? (uh, their hours of operation are correctly stated in Google maps and they have great reason, as stated, for being closed), and one person saw a rat (it happens in Thailand, but their kitchen is spotless--you can walk right in it). This is top-notch sushi, and you won't find better...
