They serve great drinks at the Moat House. The restaurant / bar which is facing the ancient city Moat is in the whole building in three stories, so it’s one of the bigger restaurant in Chiang Mai. The owner was the first person I met upon entering the roof top bar in the Moat House. It’s a good sign when the boss himself oversees the establishment. He was very friendly. And I had a seat and GT in no time, so 5 star for the service. They have some really cool wall art here and the ambiance is chilled and welcoming. You can smoke outside on the balcony 🚬 🙏 thanks I had lamb shank with mashed potatoes and it was tender and juicy. They also have live music which also gets top reviews. There’s a bit of traffic noise and fume but not many places in Chiang Mai don’t have this issue. And the worst quiets down after rush hour. If you are disabled only the ground floor is accessible. (Toilets on 1st Floor) I was there early on a Sunday evening so not to many people at this hour but the place is usually packed. Prices are VERY reasonable. Moat house is one of my favourite places in Chiang Mai. I’ll definitely be back

The Moat House Pub offers a delightful ambiance that perfectly complements its live American music. The inviting atmosphere, coupled with the lively tunes, creates an immersive experience for patrons. The Virgin Mojito, a refreshing non-alcoholic drink, stands out with its tantalizing blend of flavors—zesty lime, refreshing mint, and just the right amount of sweetness. The pub's charm extends beyond its beverages; the cozy setting invites you to unwind and immerse yourself in the music. The friendly staff further enhances the experience with their attentive service, ensuring guests feel welcomed and comfortable throughout their visit. The combination of the vibrant music, inviting atmosphere, and flavorful Virgin Mojito makes the Moat House Pub a standout destination for those seeking a relaxing evening accompanied by great music and delightful drinks.

Came for lunch. Ordered the laab moo tod, hung lay pork curry, som tam. We had great expectations for the laab moo tod as it’s one of our favorite Thai dishes and the Moat House kept coming up when we searched in the area for this specific dish. However, there was a sourness in this laab moo tod that one associates with spoiled meat. We did tell the male server but he just popped one of ours in his mouth and told us that’s how it’s supposed to taste. We left the dish untouched. The hang lay was tasty, albeit the pork pieces dry. Som tum was spicy but the peanuts atop the dish were stale. We wanted to like the food but there was something wrong with every dish. It didn’t help that the server was so unhelpful and nonchalant about our feedback.

Food was good but service was bad.

The waiter told me to order again because we wanted to go upstairs. Why make your customer order twice just because they are switching tables?

Also, the wait staff seem to mill around in their own corner talking to each other when they should be attentive to their diners. It took me five minutes of waiting until I couldn't wait anymore and I had to shout across the room to get their attention. It was not busy with customers either.

Also they don't have Leo on tap but they have trashy foreign beers like Tiger and San Mig Light on tap. Blasphemy.......

Reply to owner's response:

The young waiter, who was quite polite, initially took our first order with no issues I called him to order more after waiting for him to return to the dining area for ages (he was milling around in the band area talking to the other waiters and not paying attention to customers) When I politely called him over, some other waiter wearing glasses came over so your whole point about the same waiter serving people on the same floor is a fallacy Have you heard of a restaurant called The Good View? It has Leo on tap. You know, it's one of the most prominent venues in Chiang Mai so you might have heard of it if you've been in CM for 15 years. Also, the restaurant was not busy. The second waiter should have used his discretion and said 'OK, I will bring your food upstairs' instead of saying 'you can order again upstairs' which doesn't make any sense. Downgraded to a one star review due to your...

WELL! it sure does need a lick of paint everywhere . I think it's supposed to look like that, doesn't suit me though - just looks dirty (and is). The toilets are so bad i didn't touch anything. Held my nose with 1 hand and peed with the other. But the mosquitoes seemed to like it in there!!! It was so dark on the roof terrace I had to read the menu with my phone light! The Moat House would have got a zero rating from me except for the good atmosphere. I joined a GREAT Language Exchange party there which was so good I added 3 stars back. My Thai friend said the Thai food was ok, but the "fusion" food i was given should have gone in the toilet. OH! I almost forgot i added 1 star back for the delightful pint if Guinness i had (pity they made me go down 3 sets if stairs to get it. ) ALL the staff i spoke to had perfect English - one staff could speak Thai English AND Chinese (i can't!!). I will go back though for the Language Exchange...
