On a recommendation, I went to try this place, and it was easy to get to, right down the street from my hotel.
It's a really nice place, fancier than a lot around here (Soi 8), and has a well manicured little garden with steps in the front.
Price: It is going to cost a little more than some places around, but it's still cheaper by U.S. standards. I spent around 2300 Baht +450 tip (the service was really good, even with a fairly full house). My price is probably much higher than most would need to spend as I ordered more than a normal person should eat, like enough for 2; but I was starving...
See the photos: I got a crab egg and shrimp paste w mango salad, stir fried melin-jo leaves w egg, fried pandan leaf wrapped chicken, and a whole deep fried grouper in tamarind sauce w fried bits of lemongrass, shallot, etc
I won't do a full foodie review of the food, I'll just say - Delicious.
And I managed to eat it all.
Food notes: Ok, so you're not supposed to eat the pandan leaves around the chicken, which I found out from the waitress as I ate one... Having said that, it was really good. The chef fries the crap out of these so they were like crispy kale and crunched up easily. I only ate the wrap part around the chicken, not all the way up the leaf and stem; made for a great bite! Normally the leaf is too fibrous and stringy for consumption but has great health benefits, per a Google search. I tried some chicken without the leaf. I went back to eating the leaf around it again ;) I think if they're as fried as these were, and you want to, go ahead. Haven't you ever eaten shrimp w the shell still on?
Melin-jo leaves were new to me and now I wish I could find them at home. Might be my new favorite leafy vegetable. Sort of the texture of cooked kale with more of a spinach flavor; similar to New Zealand spinach.
I also found room for mango & sticky rice and a couple scoops of ice cream (coconut & santol). I wanted to try the durian ice cream since I've never had durian. I asked if it was stinky, and she laughed and said yes. So I didn't get it as not to bother neighboring diners. Meh, I should have got it. The mango and sticky rice, simple as it is, was the best I've had. Came with a coconut sweet cream; which I also drizzled on...
Read moreWanted to try something really good with an upgrade on the atmosphere over the street food I had been eating consistently since landing in Thailand. I found this elegant restaurant by chance and decided to give it a try. First off, the place is top to bottom beautifully styled, it truly has a charm that made me feel welcome immediately. Secondly, the service was fast and incredibly friendly. I was greeted on my way in and felt like I was treated as a guest in my friends home rather than the standard come when called service our town. Third is the food, wow was I impressed. I ordered a few dishes but the highlight was a curry that had just the right consistency and the spice was perfect. I prefer to have my curry spiced to Thai medium and have it thick like a bowl of whole milk mixed with a bit of whipping cream. Every ingredient in this dish came together flawlessly. Before I knew it the entire bowl was gone. The portions were enough for two but with the curry I was in no rush to share! If anywhere in Bangkok it is easy to get to as the bts station stops very close and for added convenience motor cycle taxis are numerous. For an authentic taste of Thailand and surrounded by an elegant array of decorations I strongly urge anyone to try this restaurant. Also I do want to clarify that of the 3 dishes I tasted, all were fantastic but I just happen to love curry beyond all else. I will absolutely be back to eat here more in hopes of finding my next favorite dish.
I revisited this restaurant since I came back to visit and no changes, it is exactly as amazing as I remember. Still a must if you are in the area! Now I've tried about half the menu over my visits and every single dish is made to perfection. Pick your favorite and...
