Nestled within a 130-year-old colonial mansion, Paii at The House on Sathorn invites you to an afternoon of refined indulgence. Once home to Lord Sathorn and later a consulate and luxury hotel, this storied house now reopens as one of Bangkokโs most iconic cultural dining spots.
๐ซ Heritage Afternoon Tea is served in the garden or within the historic chambersโpairing delicate sweets and savory bites with a curated tea collection by TWG. ย ย ย Read moreWe decided to have dinner at Paii on a whim since we are guests of the W Bangkok and they managed to fit us in last minute.
The restaurant is located in a historic building right next to the W, so it was a 30-second walk from air conditioned hotel lobby to the equally chill restaurant.
Food:
We ordered two appetizers: 1) French razor clams - Mekhong flambรฉed, homemade XO sauce, 2) Grilled blue river prawn - Pomelo salad, prawn tomalley, roasted coconut
The razor clams were tasty and they went fantastic with the shrimp chips that came as a snack! The pomelo salad is was sweet and the hint of roasted coconut really brought out the sweetness of the prawn.
We ordered 2 entrees: 1) A half order of the โGiant crab fried riceโ - 500 grams of mud crab meat, organic egg - you can see in the pictures it was hugeโฆthe two of us could not finish the half portion. We had to take it to goโฆand the crab chunks are huge! 2) No trip to Thailand would be complete without having a fried fish! #2 was a Fried Seabass with banana blossom
Dessert was a stellar Lemongrass Panna Cotta with fruit. One of the best panna cottas weโve had anywhere.
Cocktails were tasty and generous portions.
Service: outstanding service, led by M and her team: February, Pat and Cher.
Vibe: you can tell they tried to replicate the W vibeโฆwith loud musicโฆperhaps too loud. Thankfully we were in a secondary room so it wasnโt so bad, but I would think in the main dining room it would be pretty loud as to inhibit regular conversation.
Value: pricey by Thai standards, but pretty good by American standards. Would come again, and definitely staying at the W on our next trip to Bangkok (standby for that...
ย ย ย Read moreThis place has a lot going for itโthe ambiance is lovely and inviting, comfortable seating, great service. Staff speaks English well and are attentive without being intrusive. Cocktails are solidโnothing exceptional but well-balanced and easy to down.
But the food was confusing at best. Standout dish of the night was the crab fried riceโchewy brown rice with generous chunks of fresh crab meat at about 1k baht. Pricey but good.
Beyond that I just didn't know what's happening. The fried seabass was served whole with a banana flower salad on the side. The fish itself was barely seasoned, and pairing it with the salad was awkwardโit was really difficult to cut and share in a way that made sense at a group dinner.
Tomyum leaned heavily into a tomato and roasted flavor which I enjoyed for a few sips. Then the excessive coconut milk took over and we all struggled to finish it. Pork neck in curry was forgettable, and the cabbage with fish sauce was just... salty.
Mango sticky rice was reliable, as expected in Bangkok, but the Thai tea tiramisu felt disjointedโthe layers didnโt meld together and were falling apart. That's NOT a tiramisu, bruh.
For a place with such a beautiful setting, great service, and most importantly PRICEY (we spend 8.5k for four pax), we were expecting a lot more from the food. It feels like they had some concept in mind but gave up on the execution.
I might be back here to check out Bar Sathorn next to the restaurant - but for food there are a lot of other Thai fusion places that know what they're doing at the same or lower price point....
