When deciding where to celebrate a milestone in Bangkok, the Blue Elephant was highly recommended. To our surprise, there were quite a few gluten-free offerings. Everything you will read about here was prepared gluten-free, including the morning glory.
The food. Everything we ordered was truly excellent, from the cocktails to the desserts. Everything was magnificent, prepared with attention to detail, and served with flair.
The details. We secured a reservation a week in advance for 6:30. However, we were stuck in Sathorn Road traffic for nearly three hours in the pouring rain, missed our reservation, and managed to secure another reservation because it was so late. Thankfully, the restaurant graciously held our table. If you're planning on heading over, may we recommend the BTS train system? You'll have a more enjoyable evening this way.
We were immediately seated and given the menus. The piña coladas were excellent! For some reason, some of the piña coladas were served in a coconut while others were served in a glass. We couldn't figure out the difference except to add here that consistency should be considered.
Going down the receipt here: the beef satay was the best we've had in Southeast Asia--compared to Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. No overpowering smoky flavour. Just good satay. The papaya salad was good but spicy. The tom kha gai was delicious! Served in a fresh coconut with strips of free-range chicken. It was delicious. The tom yam koong was ok and so was the mangrove crab curry. The massaman lamb was OMG delicious and something to write home about! Exquisite in taste, with lamb stewed delicately in a bath of spices. This dish was truly a star. However, big however, some of the lamb pieces were tough. Although the lamb was mostly tender, the tougher pieces threw us for a loop. How could such an amazing dish have this inconsistency? So the lamb dish was amazing in flavour, the mangrove crab curry was amazing in taste but still needed an additional something to put it over the top.
Desserts. The flan was the winner. We highly, highly recommend the flan. It will blow your mind with its taste and creaminess. Amazing. The mango sticky rice and the red rubies were yummy but not nearly as amazing as the flan.
Beverages. The coffee was ok, the cocktails were delicious, the ginger tea wasn't strong, but the piñas were yummy.
Ambience. Amazing! AMAZING! Do take the time to admire the architecture and interior decorating; even more beautiful than the photos. Similar to the old mansions in Malaysia, the interior of this building is simply stunning.
In summary: dining at Blue Elephant is a once in a lifetime experience. Although yummy, it's best to order the popular dishes (the massaman lamb) to avoid running up the tab sampling the best of Thailand, because it's not the best. At 8,500 Baht in Thailand, the expectation is that we should be blown away. For a third of the price, one can enjoy Prai Raya (Sukhumvit) multiple times, where the service is decent and the food...
Read moreHello fellow foodies,
In September 2023, my husband and I visited the Blue Elephant restaurant in Bangkok. We spotted it on an exclusive list of top Thai restaurants, so naturally, we had to give it a try!
Food: The menu offers various set courses, and we opted out for one of them, asking to replace pork and beef with chicken and fish. This was no problem at all.
Each dish was a true explosion of flavor. We started with a row of small appetizers, each boasting its own unique taste. Just when we thought we were done, a new round of dishes would appear. We eagerly anticipated each course because every dish was an experience in itself.
The green chicken curry was amazing—an absolute standout. It was served with a choice of white and/or black rice. The dessert also left a lasting impression, not just for its beautiful presentation. The flavors were incredible! Think: colored sugar and a delicious homemade coconut ice cream.
We had a large bottle of water, and our glasses were attentively refilled throughout the meal.
Not everything was a perfect 10, but everything scored between a solid 7.5 and a 10. While the portions weren’t huge, by the end of the meal, we were pleasantly full.
Style/Ambiance: From the outside, the building looks beautiful. Inside, it’s classic and romantic, with candles and elegantly set tables. It’s not very spacious, but it doesn’t feel cramped either.
Each dish was visually stunning. Think flowers, vibrant colors, and delightful aromas.
Service: The service was spot on from the moment we walked in. My husband was even wrapped in a beautiful sarong by one of the staff members, perfectly fitting the Thai style. It was such a fun detail that we still talk about when thinking back about the restaurant.
Location: The restaurant is located in Bangkok’s business district, and getting there by Grab or taxi is easy.
Price: By Thai standards, it was quite pricey, especially when you consider that you can often enjoy delicious meals throughout Thailand for much less. However, we really appreciated the experience, and it was worth every baht for the joy it brought us.
Recommendation: We definitely recommend trying this restaurant at least once if you’re in Bangkok. You won’t regret it—especially if you’re looking to spend a bit more and enjoy a “fine...
Read moreI can’t recommend this enough!
I joined the afternoon class and because the other 2 people backed out, I luckily ended up having a private class.
The school is in a beautiful historic house turned school/restaurant. Very convenient as it is right by the BTS station and beside the Eastin hotel. It is Michelin rated so it’s a bonus to learn from a high quality school.
The 2 chefs who taught me how to cook the fish in banana leaves, pad Thai and prawn curry, and papaya salad. Step by step, including tips and advice that stemmed from years of cooking professionally.
Even if one joins this class only for fun, this is so worth the experience. I didn’t think I would ever get to cook Thai food as I always thought it was too complex but after this class, I ended up enjoying it immensely and I’m no longer afraid of cooking Thai dishes, now that I know how to work with ingredients I never used before in my life.
After the class, they offered to either have me bring home the food or eat it at their restaurant. Since I was in a hotel, I decided to eat it after the class.
Note that after every demo during the class, the chef offered for me to partake in the cooked dish so I would be familiar with the flavour and can duplicate it. It was a lot of food, I couldn’t finish it even if every bite was super delicious.
So it was one demo per dish and then into the cooking area for me to duplicate. It was so organized and the place was very clean. The demo classroom was a few steps away from the kitchen which made it ideal.
I was given an apron, a sheet with the list of ingredients and all the recipes, plus a certificate when I finished cooking all the dishes.
I was offered to invite my friend to join me in their beautiful restaurant to eat what I cooked. They set a table for us even if the restaurant was closed at that time (mid afternoon), the waiter served hot rice to go with the dishes, and the service was attentive. It was more than I expected and quite commendable.
I have nothing but good words for this school...
