Milk Bar - Why Is This Place So Popular?
Maybe because its one of the only big café’s around and on a popular street, but it certainly can’t be for their cakes I believe. Granted I went there only once, but I give restaurants only 1 shot to impress me enough to make me come back again. If they can’t serve perfection or atleast adequate food on their first try with me then forget about a 2nd chance of a return visit.
The things that I didn’t like about Milk Bar was their very, very small cup of Pumpkin Coffee which I ordered. It was the size of a Japanese Saki cup, extremely small like 100 ml sized and that is nothing. I wanted to get their Pumpkin Cheesecake to compliment my small cup of coffee but they didn’t have that made.
Infact they didn’t have many things made from their menu in their display cabinet. The waitress had to keep going back to the refrigerated display cabinet to see what they had available, (which was only 5 or 6 different kinds of cakes). I was very surprised that more than half of the cakes and pastries on their menu was not available because their chefs did not make them.
I asked to look into the refrigerated display case myself to pick something out and like 20+ cakes made of 1 type for only 5 different kinds of cakes. So yeah there is 100+ cakes in there but its not very feasible if they are almost all the same. They’re not offering the customer much of a choice if they have only 40% of their menu made. You need to have every cake you make available really.
Milk Bar should have another refrigerated display case in there or “make less of each item and more of every item” for more variety. The place is big enough to facilitate another display cabinet, so why not have another one in there to make and offer a bigger selection of product availability.
And another problem was way too much of a very low temperature of the cakes in their display case. The lower the temperature is the harder the cake dough will be, and it turns the cake into a solid, hardened mass. My Peanut Butter Chocolate Layered Cake was far too hard, like a brick and it was difficult to cut into and it made for an unpleasant experience to eat.
It would be smart to keep the refrigerator temperature lower overnight to preserve the longevity of the product’s shelf-life and then in the morning raise up the temperature to thaw out the cakes and have them soften up for when they are ordered. You’re not serving warm cakes, they are still cooled, but softened and not rock-hard which is a terrible approach really.
Or if they need to transfer cakes from one colder refrigerator to another that is warmer then that could be another solution. Either way, what Milk Bar has got going now isn’t nearly good enough. This isn’t Rocket Science people, it’s just common sense, and it’s only a few...
Read moreWe tried the tres leches, Coney Island (plain cheesecake), English cheesecake, banana brownie, lavender milk, matcha latte and tonic in the span of two days! The first time I was a bit disappointed to see that they didn't have many items available on the menu when we went. My first (red velvet cake), second (basque cake) and third (English cheesecake) choices weren't available at the time. So I went for the plain cheesecake which was lovely nonetheless! I was pretty bummed out to see that they did have a mille feuille matcha cake (cake made out of thin crêpes). It would have been nice if the staff pointed this out as a new addition simply because it wasn't on the menu, I just happened to notice it when I was leaving.
The lavender milk is something I had to try but now I know what it tastes like, I'm probably not going to choose it again. It's exactly how you'd expect it to taste like but I just can't get used to the idea of drinking instead of smelling lavender.
The matcha latte was just okay but I've had better. The tonic version was exactly what I was expecting but I didn't really enjoy it, boyfriend took it out of curiosity.
The banana brownie was very good considering I'm not a huge fan of bananas as ingredient in dessert! And both cheesecakes were delicious but the real star of everything was the tres leches! It. Is. Divine.
We really liked this place and would definitely come back to try out the other goods...
Read moreLocation: In a nice busy neighborhood and near the Plats Sportu Metro Station. Surround by its partner restaurants (Dogs & Tails and 3B Burger).
Food: They are best known for their deserts and they have never disappointed. Great tasting and a large serving size (not of milk shakes though). The milk shakes are small but very tasty (55hr). I recommend the lavender milk shake and tres leche cake in a jar. The restaurant also offers Instagram worth food. Liked their fries and hash browns plates but the soup is not worth ordering. Food is good but it looks better in pictures. Stick to the fries and desert.
Atmosphere: Super hipster and entertaining place. Though at the front of the house there is always a wait to be seated, seeing the waiters in their signature pj outfit always brings a smile. Very friendly waiters and you should expect an average wait of 15min to be seated. They accept credit cards and cash. English menu are also available.
Overall, some what of a tourist trap but you must definitely try it at least once during your...
