Read moreI came here for afternoon tea with my cousin who was visiting. The first impression is great - the decor is beautiful and the pub area looks cozy.
The tea was abominable, though.
You're served one cup - not one pot - of tea (or carafe of coffee). This is unusual for everywhere else we've gone for traditional tea. Upon delivering our tea tray and drinks, the wait staff never returned to ask if we wanted anything else to drink or give us a refill, which we thought they might do considering the miserly portion of tea & coffee we got. They didn't even bring my cousin extra water for her existing tea.
The food was inedible, and I say that as someone who is generally happy to eat anything that's put in front of me, particularly if it's about to be slathered in cream and jam. The sandwiches were tasteless and soggy, and there weren't even traditional cucumber sandwiches. We actually gagged a few times and gave up on the sandwiches.
The sweet treats were not much better. But the worst part was the scones themselves: shiny, hard, stodgy lumps of tasteless dough. I've had (much) better scones from lidl. I would have preferred the scones from lidl, in fact. We abandoned the tea without finishing anything, paid our exorbitant bill of £55, and left.
I wish I could say the service was good, but it really wasn't. As mentioned, no one ever came back after dropping down the tray to see if we wanted or needed anything else; in fact it seemed the wait staff went out of their way to avoid coming by.
We asked ourselves how such a travesty of a meal could have been served. Was the pastry chef off for the day? We felt you had to make a special effort to make sandwiches, scones and tea things that poorly.
One star because we now have a memory that we can hopefully laugh about later. On a long list of afternoon tea experiences, this was a distant last place.
At least the bathrooms were nice.

Read moreMy family and I came here for Mother's Day so it was super busy which made the service very slow - this would have been fine, but we did have a hungry toddler and we had to follow up our toddler's food a couple of times. And unfortunately when it came, it wasn't until half way through we discovered a hair in it... this was swiftly rectified by the maitre d.
I also requested to be seated where we wouldn't disturb anyone with a wondering small child but the seat we were sat at was too high for a highchair - a bit of a faux par in seating allocations, but the place was fully booked to be moved last minute.
Other than the issue with the our toddler's mac and cheese, the starters were just quite standard. I had the king prawn and squid and I had about 2 prawns and only 3 little battered squid on the plate. My husband had the leek and potato soup with sourdough bread which was okay. But from the underwhelming starters, the roast made up for it all. I had the lamb and it was cooked beautifully - tender, moist and marinated well. My husband had the nut roast which was seasoned well. My parents both had the mixed roast and they enjoyed every element of it. My sister in-law had the chicken, served with two large chicken legs, and my brother had the pork and again this was generously portioned with the right level of crunch in the crackling (those were his words).
The desserts were your classic, sticky toffee pudding, warm chocolate brownie, cheesecake etc. those were also executed well for very busy venue.
The maitre d, Rain, worked tirelessly to make sure we still had a wonderful dinning experience considering we had a bumpy start.
We would absolutely come back here again but maybe skipping out the starters and making sure we order as soon as we sit down.
The venue was well decorated, and had a lovely view of Bath - I think this venue is perfect for...
