No more 'East London vibe'
The review below that Nicki pang wrote was accurate at the time it was written. As you can see from the photos with the farm implements on the wall, it was a light, spacious and slightly quirky place. You had to enter through the alley, and there you were greeted by orange and white striped wallpaper. It was cool.
No more. They bought out the business in front of them on the main street, which they promptly redecorated with a very conventional gastro-pub-like atmosphere with overstuffed furniture. For a while, the saving grace was that the rear portion (now the restaurant) had been left with the spare decor, and it was still possible to relax with some tea there and break out the laptop. Unfortunately, they have also redecorated that part to conform with the newer, front café area - i.e. with the overstuffed furniture and booths. When I broke out my laptop there, I was informed that it was a 'screen free and dog free area'. Fair enough. There are ample mains outlet in the café area. Unfortunately, because that area is so full of furniture, it feels densely populated quite easily, not mentioning that the decor makes me feel like I am in fact back in the provinces.
When I have had food there, I have to say it was not anything special. The tea list is without imagination. I give two stars rather than one only because they do seem to be...
Read moreMy first time eating in Walcot House I booked a table for a group of five of us. In this day and age it is understandable that restaurants ask for a credit card against a booking and say they will charge you if you cancel with less than 24 hours notice. However, this is the first time I have seen a restaurant saying they will charge £20 a head for a no show or late cancellation and even if the party shrinks in number, so when one of our group told me he couldn't make it to dinner because he had a 3:30am departure to catch a flight the next morning I had to persuade him to at least come for a main course! Add to that the rules that they have and it doesn't make for a very welcoming feeling!
Fortunately the young woman waiting on our table was very pleasant and friendly and I have to say the ambience and atmosphere in the restaurant is nice. However it all felt a bit overpriced and the wine list very quickly goes from the bland to the ridiculously expensive. I felt a bit for my friends who chose the chicken Milanese (from the fairly limited menu) as their plates looked rather empty.
It's a nice place, but not worth the money...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday at Walcot House and the experience was amazing. From the moment we walked through the door, the staff were welcoming and attentive, ensuring that our lunch was perfect despite the delay in our arrival due to train issues from London. The team was very accommodating, showing great flexibility with the booking and understanding.
The food was as amazing, with each dish prepared with the freshest ingredients and full of flavor. Loved the anchovy caper butter on hot bread! My highlight was the delightful chocolate logs, which were part of the little treats plate.
A special thank you to the staff for also delivering on my request for a creamy, perfectly blended Piña Colada. This delightful addition made my birthday celebration even more memorable. The thoughtful birthday wishes card was a lovely touch as well.
My girlfriend had planned this surprise for me, and their effort in coordinating it added an extra layer of joy to the celebration. Many thanks!
I highly recommend Walcot House to anyone looking for a special day, whether for a celebration or simply a...
