I recently had the pleasure of dining at Bluenile Restaurant, a gem of East African cuisine tucked away in the heart of Birmingham. From the moment I stepped in, the warm hospitality and authentic atmosphere set the tone for a truly enjoyable experience. The menu offers a rich variety of traditional East African dishes, and everything we ordered was bursting with flavour. The injera was soft and tangy, perfectly complementing the richly spiced stews and lentils. The meat dishes were tender and well seasoned, particularly the Bluenile Special and lamb tibs a must try for anyone visiting for the first time. Portion sizes were generous, prices reasonable, and the service was excellent friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. The restaurant has a relaxed and welcoming vibe, making it perfect for both casual meals and special gatherings. Drink wise the best experience ever tried was Tej a unique and beloved Ethiopian wine. Tej isn’t just a drink, it’s a cultural treasure, often served at weddings, holidays, and special gatherings. Its rich aroma and smooth finish make it a favourite among both locals and adventurous newcomers. It’s a must try drink. Of course we had the best of Ethiopian coffee with traditional ceremony frankincense and popcorn. Bluenile isn’t just a place to eat, it’s a cultural experience that brings the heart of East Africa to Birmingham. I’ll definitely be returning, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore authentic East African food...
Read moreWhile this restaurant might not look much from the outside, being on another road in Birmingham that is half abandoned, you are in for a meal that is truly Ethiopian away from Ethiopia. The style is authentic Ethiopian as is the food. With a steady flow of takeaway customers, the restaurant itself was quiet with the gentle sound of Ethiopian music playing in the background while the chefs can be heard speaking Amharic while cooking up the food. This was my first experience of Tej, which is an Ethiopian honey wine, which was delicious. My dining partner, who was Ethiopian, ordered the Injera with various meat dishes to top it; if you like spicy, you'll do very well here. I requested a bowl of cottage cheese to take the edge off the heat, but this mixes well with the meat dishes either way. The food really was delicious and even though a little spicy for me, I couldn't stop myself until my tummy was quite full and the plate (large) was nearly cleared. If you like value for money, you'll leave very happy, as we did. I will...
Read moreI was supposed to go to a different restaurant tonight, however I couldn't get in. I had someone in my party that is a vegan so I looked for a place to eat. My son has eaten at this restaurant around three time's and he said it was really good. I have never eaten East African food before.
I have seen this restaurant for years but the outside does not look very appealing. However, you should not judge a book by the cover, inside was warm, well decorated and manned by amazing stuff. Kassim was very attentive from beginning to end. The service was fantastic.
I was pleased from the moment we ordered teas and they were made from real plants. I was blown away.
The food was fresh and tasty be aware that portion sizes are very good so try not to eat too many starters, we had a starter between us, good call. Took two boxes of food home.
The rice/teff bread is an acquired taste but it is fermented, so good for the gut.
I would come here again. I am grateful I tried the food just...
