📍: @devonhousejq 💃🏽Vibes : Date night, special occasion Food rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Cuisine: Caribbean Location: Jewellery quarter Birmingham ________ Part 1: 📝: This restaurant/bar opened in Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham a couple years ago. Because my first visit was amazing and I couldn’t fault it, I decided to revisit. However, the expectation second time round fell short. The service on a whole was not good. After the waitress took the orders the menu’s were left on the table, empty glasses were also left on the table for the duration of the meal. When I received my starter 2 hours later it was cold, I also had to wait around 45 minutes to receive drinks. However the cocktails were tasty and we were offered complimentary drinks for our wait. 🍴Starters - £5.50 Spicy Chicken strips - coating had good flavour, I would order it again, but didn’t like the pepper sauce. - £6.75 Fricassee chicken wings - balance of flavours was good , the depth of flavours was great you could taste everything you would want in a dish , the food definitely hit the mark. - £6.75 Barbecue chicken wings - I liked the sweet taste of flavours, it melts in your mouth. - £8 Jerk King prawns and Avocado salad - was tasty and flavoursome, cooked to perfection a really good dish - £8 Coconut crisp prawns - They were nice and crispy but needed more coconut as I couldn’t really taste it, the peppered sauce was way too spicy didn’t really like it and it did not go well with the dish. I would of preferred a different sauce. 📍: @devonhousejq 💃🏽Vibes : Date night, special occasion Food rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Cuisine: Caribbean Location : jewellery quarter Birmingham ________ 📝: part 2 - When I received my main course 3 hours later it was warm I was not impressed. I did feel like they struggled to cope with the pressure on Mother’s Day. I would not be in a rush to return as our experience this time round was not a good one. Considering it was Mother’s Day I was extremely disappointed. 🍴Mains ▪️£11.95 Veg curry - It was alright not bad, I would of pereferred potato and yam in the curry but it was just garden veg and peppers , seasoned rice needed a little bit more season as it was very bland. ▪️£16.95 Peppered steak & white rice - Steak has a sweet taste not spicy , nice strong flavours, the rice was very fluffy And the veg was flavoursome ▪️ £22.95 Steak & rice n peas - my mom ordered the steak cooked medium rare , she was impressed with flavours of the dish especially the mushroom sauce which she thought was lovely and she enjoyed the cherry tomatoes was really tasty ▪️ £14.95 Fried chicken & rice n peas - Chicken & rice was dry needed gravy , food was also warm not hot enough . I would not order it again however the rice n peas was nice and fluffy, if it had gravy it would of gone down like a treat . 🍴Sides ▪️Dumplings I wish they were cooked fresh as we did wait more than 2 hours for our food ▪️Mac n cheese - this was is nice not too creamy the consistency is just right , the plantin was sweet but it was hard so not very enjoyable , I would of liked it more soft. Colsesaw I didn’t really like it didn’t give me the wow factor. ▪️£14.95 Bbq chicken & rice n peas - it was nice nothing special, i found it to be warm And I like my food hot with the steam coming off it. #birminghamuk #supportlocalbusiness #foodlove #foodies #eating #eatout #meal #restaurants #foodblogger #blog #blogger #yum #foodstagramming #foodpic #foodphotography📷 #foodlovers #relaxedatmosphere #specialoccasions #dinner #westmidlands #caribbeancuisine #caribbean #caribbeanfood #starter #jamaica🇯🇲 #maincourse #jamaicanfoodie

My family and I recently visited Devon House for Mothers Day. On arrival, we were greeted warmly by the host and introduced to the waitress who showed us to our table. Our drinks orders were taken and we requested a little longer to decide on our food order. Considering the fact that it was reasonably busy inside, I asked for a waiting time for food and was told roughly 20 minutes, we ordered and took in our surroundings while we waited. The bar has a good selection, the music is welcoming and easy to listen to, but not too loud as to hinder conversation. The staff are genuinely happy to help, the customer service my family and I received alone would warrant a return visit. Then the food came out, first - starters, as I'm vegetarian, I am unashamedly picky with my food, preferring to eat good quality, nourishing food and before the first spoonful I was honestly hesitant, but I needn't have been - the soup of the day ( pumpkin and sweet potato ) had really packed a punch, so much flavour was in the bowl that I had to first share just to explain why I would spend the next 10 minutes in silence - a perfect mix of seasoning and good quality cooking complemented and lifted this dish. Each starter was infused with flavour that was also, not reminiscent but a direct example of authentic Jamaican cooking - food that gives you a hug. With the mains, I was again reluctant but this time only because the previous dish had been such a surprise that I didn't want to ruin it but again, there was no need to worry. I chose the three bean stew with rice and peas and was instantly reminded of my favourite dish during my visits in Jamaica - a dish that I could eat over and over. The desert was also a big hit and left us feeling genuinely content and comfortable in our surroundings, the way that you might usually only feel after eating your mum's cooking at home. Anyway I could go on, but essentially, I was positively surprised by the food, the environment and the genuine hospitality that we received and other than making for a memorable mother's day, Devon House will now be a regular on our itineraries, Thank you :) **************************** We returned for Mother's Day again this year, the quality of service and the attentiveness of the staff, I must say was even better than the last visit. Tisha, our waitress served the five of us our meals and drinks with no flaws or hesitations and provided refreshing, charismatic service, always remaining nearby, should we need her, but without being overbearing. The manager Clive personally visited our table and asked about our meal which was an unexpected and lovely gesture. With such consistent, welcoming service, we will look forward to our next visit! Thanks again

Booked here for my dad's birthday, the restuarant is quite small when you get inside, we happened to be booked on the same day as someone's 40th and they had reserved half the restuarant with a buffet service. I think the focus was more on that party. I found the service to be slow and they appeared unsure of what was available. There were several items we had asked for and they did not have them, which is typical of Caribbean restuarants/takeaways. We were a party of 12. Ordered some cocktails which I found were seriously watered down, not worth the price. Food took a little time to come but that's OK i assume it's being prepared as fresh as possible. I had the garlic prawns with rice and peas, you cannot have an alternative like stemmed vegetables instead so I had to order this separate. The steam veg was not the usual Caribbean style of doing steam veg but was actually very nice, save for the broccoli stems which were tough. I tried the rice and peas but they were not great, tasted like it was old rice as well as pot bottom, I didn't want the rice anyway. The garlic prawns were not the best, again not what I expected but I found the prawns too rubbery and just not to my liking. I tried the curry goat, it was just OK. I tried some chicken wings, I found them small and not that exciting. My dad did enjoy his oxtail so that's a bonus. We had a cake which they seemed unable to accommodate so we ended up bringing it out ourselves.(no obligation on them to) I just think they were understaffed for a busy day and again the focus was the bigger booking. Overall I wasn't impressed, however other people seemed to really enjoy the food, so I would always suggest you try for yourself.

2nd time in 5 years and nothing seems to have improved. We booked this for my fathers 65th birthday as we did for his 60th and the service seems to have fallen to new depths of disgraceful. Only surpassed by what appears to be management behind the bar. Who was intentionally rude during this ordeal.

It started when we advised that 7 people were unable to make the evening. And want to give 2 tables back to the restaurant. Where the female manager with the Bob decide to make some type of irritated response. Whilst turning her back to us and muttering under her breathe. An hour later after our food orders had been placed. We asked politely. "If they could ask in the kitchen, how much longer the food would be"? I was greeted with an attitude and as the food came out follow by a shrugging of her shoulders as to why I had bothered to come over and mention the wait. Now if the place was extremely busy I may have had more empathy, but we were the only people in there so they had no other customers to cater too. Anyone who was there when we had arrive, had left. What makes the situation even more upsetting was that when the jerk wings came out burnt and we asked for them to be replaced. They said its supposed to look like that. As if we didn't know what jerk wings are supposed to look like. They initially refused and said there was nothing they could do. We just asked that they substitute the burnt ones. They sent the young member of staff to give our family the kitchens response. So my sister, whose daughter's food this was sent the food back and cancelled her families order. The rest of the families with children continued to wait. I actually enjoyed my food when it arrived, but everyone else's was mediocre at best. There was no apology from the manager. We had to call the chef out to explain why everything was so bad. He said he was under staffed. Again, there was only us in the restaurant. The booking was for 20 but 7 family members couldn't make it in the end. 13 people. There where 3 chefs in the kitchen and 3 servers and one rather horrible bar manager.
