been coming here for years on and off with family and partners for occasions, I came the otherday with my partner as it was her birthday, we walked in and felt from the get go unwelcome.. we were placed at a table and left for around half hour with no menu or not asked if we would like a drink, anyway I ask for the menu and we decide on a dim sum for 2, bearing in mind is a sharing starter, I said to the arrogant waiter we'l have the dim sum for 2 for now, he gave me a dirty look and took our menus and walked off, I'm not one to order everything in one, me an my partner always have a starter a main then desert if there's one, but seems I upset the waiter asking for the dim sum "for now" the dim sum came and as it was only a starter it wasn't enough, so I called the waiter and asked for the garlic steamed prawns, he rolled he's eyes walked off and came back with an old bloke I think was manager, he shouted what do you want, I replied the garlic steamed prawns he nodded an walked off, whilst we were waiting the waiter that's always there the mid 30's guy and a tall scruffy looking waiter was standing sniggering at me and my girlfriend, wich obviously made us feel crap, we couldn't wait to pay the bill and leave, thanks for ruining my girlfriends birthday meal, the food was average but the service and staff are TERRIBLE. been coming over 20 years but never again.
it's funny how I'm mixed raced and felt I was treated a certain way, but also on the 1 Star reviews on here there are a few people saying they felt staff and owner were racist towards them too, we all...
Read moreSearch for Chinese restaurants in Birmingham and the China Court will likely appear at the top of the list - a "large, authentic, Chinese culinary experience". We rocked up at roughly 20:00, on a Wednesday evening during the holidays, to find just three tables occupied. We waited for a while before someone noticed us. Once they did, we waited a little longer while they tried to find a free table among the fifty-odd vacant ones. Eventually we were seated and 'encouraged' to order quickly as the kitchen was meant to close by 21:00.
With almost as many diners as there were waiters, our expectations for food were not high.
Thankfully, we were pleasantly surprised. Our food arrived, understandably, quite quickly. It was of a fantastic quality, my only gripe being the slightly dry crispy duck. Aside from the duck, we ordered black pepper chicken and noodles, a dumpling platter, sweet and sour crispy chicken, and egg fried rice.
To summise, and as a rule of thumb, if a place isn't filled with patrons, chances are the food isn't great. But, sometimes, you can be pleasantly suprised. The only question then becomes whether you want to give a place a chance. China Court isn't fine dining. In fact it isn't even a great dining experience. But, if you're after a decent Chinese sit down, you could easily do worse in Birmingham's...
Read moreWe went for lunch to celebrate a birthday and they got one dish completely wrong, and totally forgot to bring another one we ordered. Some dishes were brought out with a huge time delays (45 mins) between each delivery to the table, meaning other dishes, like rice, got cold, and some of the party had to sit around waiting watching everyone else eat. I had to ask the waiters several times throughout the meal where our food was and they said they would go and check and then never came back. The waiters were polite and it was but busy, but observing them they seemed like headless chickens. The main dishes they brought tasted okay, but my partner and child who had lemonade and egg friend rice (they don't like any other Chinese food but came because it was a family event) were sick and had diarrhea straight after. Could be a coincidence but the fact they both felt ill within the time frames after the meal into the evening tells a story. It's a shame really because we have had a few nice meals in China Court over the years, but after today's experience, we definitely won't be going back any time soon and cannot recommend this restaurant unless things improve...
