I've been a semi regular customer at this pub for 15 years now and in my opinion it's THE best pub in the city centre.
A fantastic selection of real ales and spirits, particularly Scotch and World Whiskies/eys, which as a fan of a wee dram never leaves me disappointed and it's very unusual to find a pub that caters to this.
It also has a fantastic traditional pub atmosphere in a beautiful old city building, with decor, dartboard and clientele to match. The staff are always friendly and knowledgeable and the introduction several years ago of the upstairs bar and beer terrace improved an already exemplary pub even further.
But what makes this pub more noteworthy than most is that it's home to two lovely PUB CATS. They can be found (usually downstairs) strutting about the place, sitting on the best seats (like cats always do) and occasionally approaching you for fuss. I remember Hops and Malt arriving at the pub shortly after the retirement of Welly, another lovely cat who resided at the Wellington for several years.
Ever since I first visited the pub, there have always been cats around, and they are a vital part of the charm and character of this wonderful place, setting this establishment out from the competition. Long may it remain so. This was also the first Black Country Ale pub I went to and remains the quintessential pub in the chain for me, which has grown exponentially in recent years.
If you're a visitor to Birmingham and find yourself parched, this is the place I'd recommend. A...
Read moreThe Wellington is a classic pub with classic clientele. After the removal of the pub cats (ordered by Black Country Ales...) there is a notable absence in the air. The recent refurbishment is okay. However, the tables outside (upstairs) and downstairs are awkwardly too short. The layout is less intuitive than before and would benefit from bringing back some of the larger tables. The updated William Hayward room works well.
Apart from this, the staff are fantastic as always. The atmosphere is still friendly and cosy. If you are polite, friendly, and interested in spending time either by yourself or with friendly people then the Wellington is a good choice. The pub is most known for being a real ale pub, but they also have a wide selection of whisky, rum and gin. Music is only played upstairs, at a reasonable volume.
There is wheelchair access to the rear, through Wellington Passage. Downstairs hosts an accessible toilet - radar key is available on request. There is a lift also.
The pub doesn't serve food, but allows food from outside. Plates and cutlery are provided if needed.
Overall, the Wellington has a special place in my heart. I find frustrations with BCA but have no problems with the staff that run the pub. I hope it will stay open for a long time, given the recent 20th year...
Read moreA Delightful Experience with Adorable Cats at The Wellington.
I recently visited The Wellington Pub, and it was a delightful experience from start to finish. This pub offers a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for unwinding after a long day. The highlight of my visit, however, was the adorable resident cats that roam freely throughout the pub.
The Wellington has managed to strike the perfect balance between a cozy, traditional pub ambiance and the unique charm of having friendly felines around. The cats are well-behaved and add a lovely touch to the overall experience. It's clear that they are well taken care of, and they seem to enjoy the company of patrons as much as we enjoyed theirs.
The pub itself boasts a fantastic selection of drinks, including local ales and a wide selection of spirits.
The staff at The Wellington are friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and happy to provide recommendations. Their love for the cats is evident, and they ensure that both human and feline guests are well looked after.
Overall, my visit to The Wellington Pub was an absolute pleasure. The combination of a welcoming atmosphere, and the added joy of interacting with the adorable cats makes it a must-visit spot. I highly recommend stopping by for a pint – you won't be...
