We had lunch in a typical small pub, not at all fancy or posh, but they served basic good pub grub. I had a pint of Seafarers English ale, the first time I'd tried that, and a burger with chips and salad. When I went to the bar to order, an old boy, who looked he'd been sitting there since the pub opened that morning (it was about 1.30 in the afternoon when we were there), said to me: 'See - it takes an American to make good music, dunnit?' I looked puzzled, and he explained. 'That's American music [on the jukebox] and you're American, aren't you? I could tell when you walked in 'ere.' I said yes, I was. He asked me how long I was here for. I said I'd lived here for over 20 years. 'You 'aven't lost yer accent, 'ave you?' he replied. 'Why'd you want to move 'ere? You've got ever'thing over there, even Indians.' His friend said: 'Indians? D'you mean Red Indians?' 'Yeah,' replied the first man, 'Indians, they've got ever'thing over there. I've seen them John Wayne films.' I then said that my wife was English and didn't take to life in the US, so we moved here. He wished me well, and the barmaid smiled and gave me a knowing wink. I returned to our table and said to my wife:'I've got a new friend.' She said she saw what was going on and then rolled her eyes to the ceiling. Our food arrived in good time, and the staff checked afterwards to make sure everything was OK. Top marks for friendly service!

The Eastgate in Chichester is a gem of a pub, where the beer flows as smoothly as the conversations. Nestled in the heart of the city, this traditional pub offers a warm welcome to all, whether you're a local, a dog owner, or just passing through. With a hearty menu that's sure to satisfy any appetite and a selection of drinks that could quench any thirst. The live music and Ska nights bring the place to life, making it the perfect spot for a lively night out. And if you're a fan of the classics, their dart, pool, and crib teams will make you feel right at home. So, if you're looking for a spot that combines great food, fantastic entertainment, and a cozy atmosphere, The Eastgate is the place to be. Just remember, if you're planning to visit on a weekend, book ahead to secure your spot in this slice of Chichester charm!

Had a fantastic breakfast today in The Eastgate in front of the bar which is a traditional English city pub with period fixtures and fittings and it’s fabulous for being original. We had a classic and an Eastgate breakfast and the options were fantastic; tea or coffee, orange or apple juice, granary or white toast. Perfectly cooked fantastic service and very hospitable, faultless.

Disgusted went in here yesterday to have lunch with my friend we sat down and exchanged our Christmas presents was just about to go and get a drink when some rude cocky barmaid came over to our table and said excuse me ladies u can't just come in and sit here without ordering a drink!!! To which we replied we were just about to she then replied well u have been sat there 5 minutes. Obviously we took our money elsewhere she actually did us a favour as we went to the giggling squid opposite and had a lovely lunch. Better than the overpriced pub grub we would of got in there with the rude...
