I'm really torn over this pub. Screams potential but sadly lacks investment. It's an old building with some lovely features but needs a huge amount of money spending on it. The bar area itself is ok. Warm and comfortable, plenty of seating, and looks ok. Has a Jazz bar in the basement, which I could hear but didn't visit. The prices were reasonable. The toilets, however, were disgusting. Now I say this half heartedly, as it would appear that it has two sets of both male and female toilets, which I personally think is a mistake. As a man, I clearly didn't see the ladies toilets, but the gents on the eastern side of the building were tiny and horrific. Three urinals but barely room for one person. The floor was disgusting and the walls and fixtures in taters. The toilets on the western side were surprisingly better kept. They would be better just making one side male and the other side female and having much more room for both. The ale was good and the staff polite. Plenty of outside seating which was well...
Read moreThis was one of my Grandfather's favourite pubs in Scarborough and it has a truly wonderful old world atmosphere inside. The staff were absolutely wonderful - friendly but professional on the phone when booking, welcoming when we arrived, attentive without bothering us when we ordered out food and knowledgeable about the area and AF beer (on tap!), which we loved! The food was good, solid pub fair, if not the highlight, but portion sizes about perfect for us. And when they didn't have pizza for the kids, they were perfectly happy to order in - an extra step you don't see very often. You know it's bloody good customer service when it doesn't feel like customer service - they're all just naturals. The pub is quite tired and could do with a bit of a refresh, but I suppose that's part of it's charm and why it's a hidden friendly local gem in the heart of...
Read moreI ordered the Lamb Bhuna and Jalapeño Chilli Burger. Both arrived on freezing cold plates. The Burger was mushy and looked pre cooked and microwaved with a jar of jalapeños thrown over it. The bread burger, obviously defrosted, crumbled in my Partners hand. A nasty, tasteless mess. The Bhuna was a horror story all of its own, I have seen my cat throw up better looking vomit; greasy, cold and tasteless, I got half way through this nightmare and wanted to throw up. I complained to the Chef, who stood there, looked at me and stormed off back to the Kitchen, no apology.....nothing, apathetic, thoughtless, rude and just...
