A lovely historic pub right in the centre of York and very close to other tourist attractions. The interior of this pub has been preserved very well and stepping inside really does transport you back a few centuries to the times of Guy Fawkes and Dick Turpin. The service was excellent, friendly, attentive and couldn't do enough for you. I feel like the prices were also reasonable given what we ate and drank. Possibly my only complaint would've been the pie we ordered - the filling was delicious and the presentation was also nice, however it seemed like the pie lacked a pastry base and sides inside the pot it was served in (so essentially it was pie filling covered with a pastry top). Don't get me wrong, it was tasty and even enough for two to share, but I expected something slightly better considering the price and the standard of everything else. However all said, I enjoyed my visit.

Historical, excellently located in the innermost centre of York. They offer a good discount if you bring in the tourist guide that you can get at the bus or hotel for free. The food was great. We shared a Fish Platter (starter) and a Game Suet Pudding (main), the pie was deliciously filled with a rich stew beautifully concocted of pheasant, venison and partridge; and the fish Platter was very good and offering a variety of goujons, scampi, shrimps, smoked salmon, crab and fish cakes, etc. The atmosphere as well was enjoyable. Only the serving staff was a bit rude for starters, luckily they later realized that my request was totally valid and came to the table to explain themselves and offer and apology. Overall we had a lovely dinner and drinks evening.

We didn't quite know what we wanted to eat after trudging the streets of York all day. My fiancé spotted the punch bowl. We walked in & managed to find a seat in the lovely bar area, despite being busy. we had a drink and decided to eat. My partner had ham egg n chips. I wanted the beer bartered haddock, however, disappointingly they had run out. The friendly barman, did offer me an alternative, fish cakes, which I decided to have. Both our meals were nice... accept my partners eggs were both cold.. maybe the ham had cooled them down? Overall it was Nice..

Booked a table during our stay in York due to it looking very cosy from the outside and when we arrived we were seated promptly with a warm welcome from Maddie who is incredibly pleasant and accommodating.

You can order at either the bar or on their app and they have a wifi network to facilitate this. I ordered the beef rib, shin and brisket pie and my partner ordered the sausage and mash. No complaints from my partner re: the sausage and mash and she is very fussy with food.

The pie, however was unbelievable. Firstly it is massive, I was initially apprehensive at the £18.50 price tag however I was very surprised when a pie near enough the size of the plate was placed in front of me by Noah, who was also lovely. The pie comes served with a side of mash and carrots, both of which are reasonably portioned especially when considering the size of the pie. The food was still piping hot and the pie was everything you could possibly want in a beef based pie, the meat was melt in mouth and packed with the rich red wine flavour that they advertised on their menu.

Laura, another front of house member checked in with us throughout ensuring we weren't in need of anything.

Suffice to say, I was very satisfied with the quality of service from the front of house staff and the food was fantastic value for money.

We did not order from the bar, however I noted they have a very good range of alcohol including cocktails, beers and ciders with a particularly good range of whiskeys and gins available which I seem to come across less and less these days.

We will absolutely...

I booked a few days in advance for 5pm Sunday 8th October. Myself and my fiancé had brought my mum to York for her birthday and this was going to be her birthday meal as she loves a good Sunday dinner. I booked for 5 people, 4 adults and a baby in a pushchair. We arrived about 20 minutes early but were told our table was ready in the back. The waiter told us we had 2 tables (assuming we would be pushing them together which is fine) but when we went into the back room there were people sat at our apparently reserved tables? The staff suggested us sitting right at the back where a group had just left however it was next to a huge beam meaning the pushchair wouldn’t fit there (rather than just asking the couple sat at our table if they could move to a different table). Quiet disheartening as we had booked in advance to make sure we had a table. We were then directed back to the front bar and were told we could sit wherever we liked. The only large table was directly In front of the bar with the football playing directly above us on a TV. Anyway we scan the code on the table to look at the menu and they were literally sold out of 80% of their menu- no Sunday dinners, not even sausage and mash? It would have been great to have been told this when we first arrived as we were booked in for dinner and would have saved the hassle of finding different tables to sit it whilst manoeuvring a pushchair around quite a cramped area. Anyway we ended up leaving and finding food at a pub just down the road which was delicious with really attentive staff and...

Had Sunday lunch here on 19.10.25, at beginning of service at 12 pm. Ordered another drink with the roast but failed to pick up the drink because i was distracted by something else, the young bar/waitress make a comment which i did hear clearly on not waiting on tables when she brought my forgotten drink over. I did apologized for that. Seen three/four roast meals go out about five minutes later at start of food service, bit of a wait, then the fella who ordered straight after me with a burger, his meal came out, I waited from about 10-15 minutes later from start of service to have my meal ( if it was busy i would of understand it, non issue) the waitress was service me brought my roast meal over, didn't ask me if i wanted anything else she almost ran away. It was the more experienced and attentive waitress who asked me if i needed anything. Despite beginning of service the roast meal was luke warm to cold in some parts, still tasted lovely, i was hungry and i didn't want to make a issue at the time. I can see in the room the other customers who ordered their food then, to table, their wasn't much of a wait. Studied the menu whilst I waited and i was planning to go back the next day,...
