Ye Olde George Christchurch — Restaurant in England

We were given a Buyagift voucher worth £120 and we chose a three course meal at this pub. Honestly, this was the worse pub food and experience we have ever had. We are so angry, I would give this pub minus 5 if I could! Firstly we were only allowed to choose our meal from a very watered down version of their proper food menu with a sparce choice. Having checked the menu online before booking our voucher meal at this pub, this was our first big disappointment not being able to have what we would have liked. Secondly, the quality of the food was horrendous. We had halloumi bites which came on a tiny tiny plate, a few heated up frozen battered halloumi pieces on some limp rocket with chilli sauce straight from a jar poured over them. Then we had a burger which came with none of the accompanying bits it was supposed to, no BBQ sauce and nothing but some limp iceberg lettuce in the burger and some frozen chips. It was small, like that you would get at a takeaway. Lastly a very small choice of deserts, of which it was ice-cream, or ice-cream in a croissant (weird), and even that didn't come with all the bits it was supposed to come with. And for the desert we had to argue with a very rude server about what our voucher entitled us to. When we tried to order the desert he said we didn't have the right voucher and were only allowed two courses. I had to find my Buyagift email to prove that we had booked 3 courses. As if we could try and con them when we had to give them the voucher to book in the first place! When we left and said goodbye he barely acknowledged us and was just plain rude. We didn't make a fuss or complain at the time because my partner and I had been really looking forward to this meal out. We never go out to eat anymore because we just can't afford it. We have had some hard times recently and this was a gift from a family member. We were determined not to completely ruin our evening by having an argument. However, I had to write this review because, quite frankly, nothing stinks more than the stench of being conned. Had a really disappointing experience here today which makes me sad as we've always loved this pub. Very understaffed for the Easter holidays. We had our two grandchildren with us who are both dairy free so I ordered two vegan cookie dough desserts with vegan ice cream and chocolate sauce, this in it self was a painful process as the bar man didn't know how to put it through the till and had to keep checking it was in fact dairy free. Finally ordered and went and sat at our table. (After being told there could be a 40 min wait) 15 mins later a young man comes to the table and tells us there's no vegan ice cream. Offers alternative which isn't dairy free so I ask for a refund. Neither of the two barmen can do a refund so I have to wait for the manager. 20 mins later she comes to do my refund 🙏 she leaves , I check my receipt only to notice the card details on it don't match mine. I query with the barman to be told it's nothing to do with him, he doesn't deal with refunds! I then wait another 20 mins for the manager, by this time my grandkids are extremely bored!! She finally comes back , I show her the receipt and point out the numbers don't match, only to be told I should get a refund within 7 to 10 days!!! If not to pop back in. What a great place. The staff were really friendly. We sat down, looked at the menu and there didn't seem to be a kids menu. (Stupidly I didn't ask at the bar) but there were plenty of things our little one would eat. I ordered from the welcoming lady behind the bar who was really nice. Then a guy came over and asked if we'd ordered as they had kids menus inside. (They blow away outside) he was really nice but we told him we were happy with the choice anyway. He then brought out a plate for our little one (as we'd ordered a few sides for her) and then he brought her food first so it had a chance to cool down. That's first rate customer care right there. On top of that, my wife left her phone on the table when we left. They tried chasing us down, but we'd gotten too far, but they kept it safe until we realised and collected it. So it's safe to say the staff are amazing. On top of that, the food was superb. My burger was tasty and juicy as well as the perfect size and the sides we ordered for the little one were so tasty, she polished them off! Something she very rarely does.
