I've eaten Korean BBQ on many, many occasions, both within the UK and abroad - my partner and I were naturally excited to learn of this place's opening in Dundee. Our experience, however, was just generally really bizarre and offputting.
There was an issue with smokiness inside the restaurant while we were there, which in and of itself is not a big deal to me. I've worked food service, I know sometimes stuff like this happens. What was very off-putting, however, was having staff lurking around every table, turning grills down to minimum temperatures, and chastising guests for trying to adjust temperatures. I can understand wanting to remediate the smoke issue, however, other guests at our table were having a difficult time getting their meat to actually cook. In the case of beef, the concern with not being able to get hot enough sear is generally just gonna be unpleasant texture, but in the case of pork and poultry, there is a serious food safety concern with cooking at insufficient temperatures. On one occasion, one of our guests attempted to turn up the grill to a more medium temperature, because his meat just wasn't cooking at all, and a member of staff came by not long thereafter to tell him off and reset the grill back down to low temp.
I was myself also on the receiving end of some bizarre admonishment from staff, when I attempted to grill some vegetables along side the meat. The reasoning behind this was entirely unclear, a staff member just came by, snapped at me to not put vegetables on the grill, and then in the same breath demanded that I remove the vegetables and clean the grill. Can confidently say that I've never had something like that happen in a KBBQ restaurant before, can confidently say I've never had something like that happen in ANY restaurant before.
In terms of flavor, the food itself was very alright. Some nice flavors hiding in the meat, but the cuts were sloppy and the grill issues made the cooking definitely suboptimal. We had ordered the Set B from the BBQ menu, and we were also very taken aback by the portions. The menu itself states that this particular set is intended for 2-3 people, the set is priced accordingly, maybe a touch more expensive than typical of the Dundee area, but nothing outrageous... in theory.
Our meat platter arrived very quickly - like so quickly that we were initially questioning whether we got another table's order (we didn't). And 30 minutes into grilling, the meat was all we had, and we were concerned, because something seemed very off about the idea of a £43.90 on what was not only a much smaller portion of meat than expected, given past experiences, but also at that moment seemingly JUST meat. We were discussing between ourselves whether this place was a ripoff of biblical proportions, when finally at yeah, about the 30 minute mark, one of the waitstaff asks if we ever got our sides, which to our surprise were supposed to have come out at the start with everything else.
Our initial relief was short-lived, however, as the sides were also not what we were expecting, and again, definitely not 3 people's worth of food, and for the two of us also just not enough to satisfy. It was these side vegetables, fyi, that I had put on the grill (I have some health issues that make cooked vegetables preferable) and subsequently invoked the wrath of one of the waitstaff.
I understand that this business is very newly opened here. I've staffed during a number of opening weeks throughout my life, I know how chaotic it can be. But what I experienced here was just generally unacceptable. Read moreSecond visit to korean bbq restaurant last week. Had the beef bugogli which was really good. Alongside complementary side dishes and korean chicken thighs with honey sauce. All very good. We had squid stir fry that was very good as well. Prices were good for all we had to eat. Both of us had food to go as we couldn't eat anymore. Totally full. Next time we will try the meats and cook at table. See how it compares to the first time we had meat order on first visit. Compare. Enjoyed food though I probably should of got spicy version or added garlic. Give it even more flavours.
This was first visit review when place first opened. Went with a friend, new experience for us both. Was new experience in Dundee for us. We had set course B beef selection. We added extra radish, probably because I preferred it to the other pickled mix of vegetables. Ordered side of garlic and chilli, wished there was a choice of more vegetables we could of ordered. Pak choi, onions, shredded carrots, spring onions? Any of them I'd of happily added to the meal as we ate. We did enjoy cooking on the bbq as well as the choices of meat. Though we'd a few bits of grizzle, put those bits to the side. Staff gave us tips on how to cook on grill and swapped it to a clean one as we went through platter of meats. Not gonna lie, this is officially the best place I have ever eaten at and looking back on my past reviews, I'm going to have to change other reviews because this place just took No' 1 spot. The all around atmosphere was just so relaxing. The decor is perfect for the scenery in which the food is based, the music was a soothing oriental style and very relaxing and the smell just straight away got my tastebuds ready and raring to go. The food? Astonishing with a wide variety to choose from. The meat was just booming with flavour and the marinated meat melts in your mouth. My partner is a fussy eater but she absolutely loved nearly everything we got and we got a lot between us both. The staff were very welcoming, polite and warm offering service unmatched and were more than happy to help, even to teach my partner to use chopsticks so, thank you! Special shout out to Min and Scout, you two were amazing but all in all, everyone who worked there were brilliant! Huge compliments to the kitchen staff for great cuts of meat and presentation. This place for me is an 11 out of 10.
