This was honestly one of the worst pastry shop experiences Iāve ever had in Europe.
The woman who served me (an older white lady) picked up the pastries with her bare hands ā no gloves, no tongs, nothing. I was completely shocked. She had also been handling the cash register and walking around the cafĆ©, so her hands were touching all sorts of surfaces. Extremely unhygienic and unacceptable, especially for food service.
I bought a chocolate profiterole and a strawberry-shaped cake, then noticed there were seats available with other people sitting down and eating. Since the profiterole was quite big, I sat down to eat ā only to be approached immediately and told that I had to pay an additional Ā£1.95 to sit and eat, even though Iād already bought their desserts. I explained that I didnāt realize there was a dine-in fee, as there were no clear signs, and the table menus featured the same desserts I just bought. I even offered to order a drink from the menu, but she insisted I must pay the dine-in fee anyway since I had already started eating.
It gets worse. She made me get up and walk back to the counter just to pay the Ā£1.95 fee, then spent almost 10 minutes fumbling with the payment machine, repeating ājust a momentā and āsorryā over and over again while I stood there awkwardly holding my half-eaten profiterole. It was incredibly frustrating.
As for the pastries: the profiterole was okay, but the strawberry one was just so-so.
Overall, the hygiene standards, service quality, and customer treatment were bad. This experience left me with a very negative impression of Dundee. First time ever I felt the need to leave a 1-star...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAlthough we weren't able to eat in the cafe (bc it was so busy) ;) we were able to order the famous fudge donuts and man were they incredible.
We bought one per person back to our golfing men and they were thrilled. They just wanted to have a bit more.
The cafe and restaurant was nicely decorated and reminded me of what a bakery would have looked like in the early 20s and 30s when this bakery began - doesn't look like much has changed except the menu a bit I'm sure.
Half tourist must-see/half-restaurant if you are in Dundee for the day definitely put this place on...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreUp to Dundee for work this morning. Unfortunately no butteries when I phoned the Whitehall Street shop just before 10 am but I went in later & bought a couple of bridies & a big tub of stovies which Iāve just had with oatcakes for a late lunch back at home. The stovies were excellent. Really full of flavour & also a very good consistency. If the bridies turn out to be as good Iāll be delighted. Next time Iām in Dundee Iām going to call a couple of days in advance as the shop have very kindly said they will save some butteries for me. Thatās proper...
