Right, first things first, I am going to be biased because I already really respect the man that runs this shop.
My wife and daughter queued for record shop day at Assai Records for 3 hours (half 5 in the morning) and this cafe, out of the goodness of their hearts started giving out free hot rolls for those that waited in the cold.
This was a local business supporting another local business. They didn't ask for anything in return. Selfless community spirit.
To return their gesture of kindness I went for breakfast this morning. There were tables for 2 and 4 and lots of outside seating too. It was also very clean and their very recent food hygiene pass on display for all to see.
The food was brilliant. I've never tried Turkish salami before but it came with my breakfast and it was delicious. It was like a much less salty version of polony. Definitely worth a try.
Wife had the Turkish breakfast and they don't scrimp on the olives or goats cheese. You also can't leave hungry because the owner reminded us twice of the unlimited toast that comes with breakfasts.
Salad was fresh and crunchy and the drinks were excellent too. Mocha was made with Cadburys chocolate and in today's world is a rarity as everyone uses cheaper and cheaper products.
And finally, back to the service. This is how it should be done. Almost alien levels of friendliness. They talked to me about the previous people that ran the cafe with admiration and respect and all about Dundee with pride.
The staff were genuinely attentive and clearly love serving the public. I was blown away and seeing how nice they were leaves me almost unsurprised about the previous kind gesture I mentioned on record shop day.
Nothing was trouble. Everything was only a question away. I love this place and the people that run...
Read moreGoogle maps indicates an 8am opening. Had a train at 8:50, its a 3 minute walk to the station so I figured I'd stop for a full Scottish breakfast since it will be hours before I'll get another chance for a proper meal. 8am opening would be perfect. Arrived at 7:50 sign on the door says they open at 8. 8:05 nobody is there, doors locked, delivery van out front not any happier than I am. Even if the doors were unlocked at 8:00 it would take 15 minutes to open up and get the grill and friers going (that's probably optimistic) so in reality 8:30 would be the earliest a hot full Scottish could be served but of course that's only if they were open at 8 but they weren't. Open at 8 means ready to prepare and serve hot breakfast menu items not just be there to unlock the doors and that wasn't the case this morning. Not sure when someone finally I arrived I left and had breakfast at the Sleeperz. Classic example why small independent restaurants fail and corporate chain restaurants are taking...
Read moreWe did. Don't. Just spent over £30 on a take away that was small, below standard. Chips old oily. Donner kebab and salad on the side is like a simplified bit of nothing. Salad just iceberg and tomato. Can't even eat it. Oh and the £3.95 milkshake.... sugar water and tiny. If you want a proper Donna kebab and chips and cheese go somewhere else. The whole thing feels like a invite to a children's tea party and we pretend that it's lovely. Phoned to return it and complain, I got "the boss will be back in 10 minutes". Phoned back 3 or 4 times and they would not answer my calls. I'm sure nice guys but maybe they should not be in the professional food business. The perfect example of why small independents go out of business and...
