My wife & I decided to try this restaurant as we'd decided on Chinese food & this restaurant was very close to the nearby King's Theatre, where we were going to watch the long-awaited return on stage of the hilarious Rhod Gilbert (easy 5 stars, HIGHLY recommended). This was our first time trying this restaurant & it wI'll most definitely be our last.
Starting with whats good; it is ideally located for Kings Theatre, it is authentically designed inside & offer a generous sized portion of rice.
Now for what was sooo bad; very unfriendly, unwelcoming staff, there appeared to be a language barrier, I'd asked for soda water & lime, the waiter then asked me at least another 3 times, I then decided on opting for lemonade & even that was tested another twice, almost 5 mins just ordering two drinks (astonishing, seen as they claim to have been established here for over 40 years) the service was so slow that we decided on only a main meal each, I had chicken satay & fried rice (the chicken was slightly over done, a bit chewy for my liking & 4 very average goujon sized pieces, the rice was very "stodgy" (clumpy) my wife ordered chicken fried rice, a very generous sized portion of, again stodgy rice with little chicken though very bland (just as well we'd decided to split both 'meals' the separate satay sauce was in great need. All in all very expensive for a completely all round very dissapointing experience. We couldn't leave quick enough (talk about being made feel very unwelcomed) & we certainly got the feeling that they were just as delighted to see us go. Personally speaking & very unsurprisingly we'll NEVER go back. There are far SUPERIOR & far CHEAPER Chinese restaurants to be found everywhere, especially nearby in...
Read moreSo after a truely appalling experience here last night I would like to share with the OWNER!! your very rude and arrogant member of staff ADAMS Behaviour! So if he telling me the truth the owner is mr sang ! Well mr sang this guy is beyond rude! I ordered chow mein and the waiter brings me out vermicelli I look round to tell someone it’s wrong all the staff are sitting at a round table around 10pm eating no One cares to ask how my food is or check in on me! I start eating the meal thinking it’s late and I’m hungry knowing the restaurant maybe closing soon! After eating half the meal I finally usher ADAM over he asks me if everything is ok I tell him the mix up of order and that I wasn’t to pleased no one came to ask how my food was! His attitude begggers belief ! I should of said when the food came it’s to late to give my side of the story and he not interested in what I have to say! My opinion doesn’t matter and if I tell my side on here the next day he doesn’t care as it’s not his restaurant! And if I don’t like it don’t come back so to speak! I asked maybe u could reduce a small bit of the bill by way of gratitude for my custom! No chances there ! Well the food is vastly over priced the service is diabolical and hopefully this review is met by the kind of people like myself who will think twice about eating at your...
Read moreSummary: I went two days in a row. Enough said.
Review: I really liked the duck here. So much that I came back the following day and had more. On the second day I had it with a whole stack of delicious, crunchy greens with ginger.
The dim sum I had on day one were a mixed bag. The turnip cake is always my benchmark for taste and quality and here it was ok, but not the best I've had (that award still goes to Shanghai Bay in Southampton). It was kind of a bit thick and somewhat underflavoured, in my opinion. The Chao Chow Glutinous Rice Roll was underwhelming, not least because of the effort gone into making it. I could say similar things about the water chestnut cake, for which I had high hopes. It definitely was interesting texturally, but wasn't delicious especially, being slices of chestnut suspended in a strange orange, custard flavoured jelly like slice. On the plus side, the Cheung Fun in all its forms was great. The whelks were also good, but the winner for me was the savoury meat croquettes. These were the best I've eaten anywhere.
I'd like to add that the staff were pretty friendly and the general vibe of the eating area was as good as it gets for a Cantonese restaurant - lots of people from all walks of life, lots of families, a few solo diners. I liked it. I...
