This venue was our 3rd scheduled stop on the Glasgow Subcrawl and one we were looking forward too thanks to previous visits by some of our tour party. We turned up early Saturday afternoon on the 7th of September. A couple of our party had entered ahead of us. As the rest of us approached we were immediately quizzed by the door staff. Not the warm Irish welcome that we expected! “Have you a function room booking?” was our “welcome” to the venue. Now the Glasgow Subcrawl is favoured by groups/hen parties/stag parties/staff parties/birthday celebrations and the likes. Ours was a simple 24th birthday celebration/get together and included a responsible group of young men who have remained close friends from the start of school (or earlier) through their football team and beyond school. A sign of their maturity was to extend their invitations to their fathers (all late 40s+). 5 fathers were free to join in a weekend of valuable father and son time! Back to the answer to the door staff question, unfortunately, we did not have function room booking and were told that “I can’t let you in.” We were left quite aghast and this was made worse when the first to arrive exited and said he didn’t understand, as the place was empty! Thankfully this was our only disappointment during the sub crawl, thank you to all the establishments that welcomed us with open arms, Inn Deep, Wintersgills, Times Square, The Laurieston, The Bellrock, Kensington, Brechins, Deoch an Dorus, The Lismore and Tennent’s. Waxy o’Connor’s could learn a...
Read moreHow dare they tell punters they cant wear Celtic and other relevant football colours in here. It was hot and humid yesterday they charge nearly £7 for a pint . Their loss I only bought one pint because they said in effect you must behave as if you are living in a police state with next to no social freedoms . I can honestly not say the pour of the pint was anything special to enslave my mind to their dictatorial ways I went to other pubs that let me take my jacket off they made more money out of me as a result. This seems like a very cynical theme bar you see a lot of pubs like this the world over. Football colours have history and should be allowed to thrive as religious dress is without question . I would never care to return to this expensive pub as even the last time I went everything was really expensive , I'm sure the manager will moan when people stop paying £7 for a pint and to be treated like children in their own working class leisure time . Besides the staff were not friendly or jovial . I'm sure there will be some assertive and dictatorial reply as the capitalist one per centers want to have us believe we as consumers are there to serve them and not a part of a free market. This is the kind of country and nation that Starmer demands !! Plenty of pubs allow football colours and there is no major agro as a result . The pub trade is as much a hypocrite as the...
Read moreHaving spent a great night previously in here, we returned tonight after having dinner. The surly, bearded doorman at the back door, refused entry to my friend as he had shorts on. My friend made a passing remark about how he had been in there the night before in full Frankenfurter regalia, including a basque and suspenders with no problem. As he was staying in the adjoining hotel, he said he would go change.
The doorman said he would be refused entry because of his threatening, passive aggressiveness. There were another 5 of us who witnessed everything and there was nothing threatening nor passive aggressive. I tried to speak to the doorman who ignored me and continually tapped away on his phone. I asked him to explain what was going on. He ignored me again, and I had to repeat my question. He continued to stare at his phone and mumbled something about my friend's attitude.
I have never experienced such an ignorant, rude doorman as he. The fact he didn't even have the courtesy to look up at me when I tried to talk to him and was more interested in his phone gives an incredibly bad impression. My friend and I had also been in there a few hours before this happened and he was wearing the same clothes he was then refused entry with!
All in all, it was embarrassing and uncalled for and put a dampener on a great day. None of us...
