Lovely afternoon visiting Lichfield and happened upon this backstreet pub. Busy but all good. Served one drink, no problem at all. Went up for another, let the guy who'd waited longer than me go first as a decent person would. Old barmaid in dungarees enters the fray, serves bloke by me who'd just come to the bar first. I politely said, "Excuse me, I've been waiting a while? Miserable old barmaid barked at me 'CALM DOWN '. Seriously??? I calmly replied,'I'm perfectly calm, thank you. I was just making a valid point '.. She then barked,'Do you want a drink or not? '. Absolutely horrible woman. No need whatsoever for her rude, arrogant treatment of a customer that'd done nothing wrong whatsoever. No problem with other staff apart from this miserable sod. She slammed my partner's glass of wine down and poured me a dreadful pint of cider with a massive head on it, I had to knock the top off it to before I left the bar. No need at all for the dreadful attitude and sour faced actions of this obviously unhappy old...
Read moreThis is probably the best real ale pub in Lichfield which is a tall order given the competition. Never had a bad pint of bitter here and always has a great selection of real ales to choose from. I would have awarded it five stars but I’m slightly disappointed at their policy of reserving tables. Have been turned away three times over the past week as the pub was ‘fully booked’ with only outdoor space available. Whilst I have no issue with making a booking in advance there are the odd occasions where an impromptu pint is always nice to have. Being turned away when it was clear that a few tables were available for a quick pint before the guests arrived was a tad disappointing to be honest. We all have respect for how hard it is to be a publican particularly during these difficult times but come on folks, we are middle aged respectable patrons that want to support you. Don’t turn us away as you’ll end up losing...
Read moreCozy traditional pub in the heart of Lichfield. This establishment offers 5 regular cask ales (at the time: Greene King Abbot, Holden's Golden Glow, Marston's Pedigree, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Wye Valley HPA), plus 3 guest ales on tap. So, not too exciting a selection, but not bad either. The décor is very nice indeed and should appeal to families. Divided into several different rooms/sections, it won't get too loud even at peak times. I found the staff very friendly and helpful indeed during my visit, and I would have had a late lunch there, but The Horse & Jockey doesn't offer food all day [the window on lunch offers closes at 3 p.m.). Nevertheless, if you're looking for a solid traditional pub with a decent ale selection in central Lichfield,...
