I’ve been going to the Little Bakers since I was a kid. I first went in for silly smiley face cakes and gingerbread men, later in life for lunch snacks and the occasional big cake. I was very sad when it closed down but was optimistic for the new launch, as it was starting to fall apart and behind the market. The site that opened was simply put a trainwreck. As a small business owner myself I admired them for trying to do something new, but wish they had done some research. They sold an artisanal food menu that they’d produced with the cheapest ingredients they could get. They had third wave coffee prices but used beans you wouldn’t give to your worst enemy. They had baked goods on offer that had sat out all night and tasted like cardboard. In short, they pretended to be something they were not, and the fatigued staff who had made the swap from the old business struggled to keep any customers. Their new design looked like they had learnt from their mistakes. Gone was the cringey graffiti sign, and now there is the simple classy ‘Camden Bakery’. Again I became optimistic that they had learnt from their mistakes. Sadly though, I went in today for their opening and it’s clear things are worse than ever. The space itself is still laid out like a restaurant, so you walk in and feel like you should wait to be seated or that you’d be rude to walk straight up to the bar. The food is scattered throughout the seating area, which feels grimy when you’ve just stepped off bustling camden high street. The staff stand behind the bar with their backs to the door, but when they looked over at me it was clear that they wished I would just eff off. I approached the bar, meandered around looking for something to buy, and was treated to a very hostile ‘What?’ from the girl behind the bar. I talked to her briefly, but a conversation was like getting blood from a stone. She was outright rude. I couldn’t believe the owners/managers weren’t around for their opening day, and when I asked if they were the girl got even more aggressive. I left without buying anything because it was clear I wasn’t welcome. Me and my team are based in the area, spending around £10 per day each minimum on our lunches and brunches, and there is no way we will be coming in until they fix their quality, their service, and just put some effort in. When it closes down again I can only hope someone will take over and take it seriously.

I popped in here this afternoon for cake and coffee. The woman who served me was pleasant enough. I didn’t appreciate the man sweeping the floor around me and banging the other tables into my table while I was eating. I went to the toilet to wash my hands and thought I saw something move on the floor of the kitchen which is open to view from the cafe floor. I looked again and there were a couple of mice running around the kitchen floor. I quietly mentioned it to the man who works there and he said that he knew!!! I mentioned Health and Safety and he didn’t bat an eyelid. So, I would recommend avoiding this cafe until they get the pest control people in! Update: I contacted Camden Council Environmental Health department and it looks as though the problem is being sorted!

This bakery was on my list for a while and I always walk past but never went in until now. I was very disappointed! It was not busy at all but didn’t feel welcomed at all. There was no welcome from the staff there, the lady in front of us was served and the service I thought was very biased. She was given a bag straight away & the shop assistant even helped her pack. When it was my turn to pay, there was no hello or if I wanted a bag even though I had a few items. She just placed the bag in front of me whilst I was trying to pay. I asked for a receipt & she seemed like it was a bother. I got a donut & I wish I didn’t as it was so greasy (as you can see from the pictures) and the dough was not soft at all! I will not be going back again, what an utter disappointment!

First visit to Camden Bakery, was in London for court and decided to head into Camden for a little mooch about. After looking around Camden Market, I was fancying myself a fat doughnut, clearly the doughnut stall that used to be there failed to generate income so my girlfriend found this little gem. Oh good heavens, I'm certain glad I agreed to try it out, their custard doughnut with the little raspberry slapped on is DEVINE!

It actually reminded me of the Bombolone you get in Italia, overheard some lady mention Too Good to Go and thought why the hell not check it out and try some of their goods at the same time. Their sesame bloomer is how one should taste, intense flavour of sesame seeds which I adore! Their Pain Au Raisin is beautiful, not sure on the chocolate though, but I'm not a big chocolate person anyway.

Either way, I think my next visit to London will include a trip to the bakery just to bring some goods...

A speedy warm welcome . The handsome guy on the tea served quickly and with charm.

The take away cake I've had previously and was fine . The gateaux slice I had with my tea today though was most disappointing. As another reviewer mentioned the cake had the taste of two or three days old in the fridge . Indeed I never leave cake, but I left half a slice and at London prices too! I recognise it's difficult to keep larger cakes fresh unless the turnover is high. Maybe smaller cakes and less choice so to increase the turnover so they remain fresh. And serving inside on a throw away plate wasn't great!

It was good, though, to have a proper good sized teapot and cup and saucer ( though the very small cup handle was a challenge) with fresh milk.

This bakery has the potential to be great with some added care and some greater attention to operational procedures so all is always fresh and...
