The Soho branch is better in atmosphere and service, but it was overpriced too, like this branch. To start with, the atmosphere is very run down. The toilet was not clean enough.
Especially in terms of decoration and atmosphere, this Old Street branch is in a bad condition. If I would pay 30 pounds per person for a mediocre food, at least I would expect a much better service and ambience! But alas, none of this was there to be found! Still you have to pay service charge. This is not fair.
The service was friendly, but not attentive. The waiters just didn't care about you. They cared more about chatting in a corner with each other.
Also, the plates that placed on our table were dirty. The waiters were not aware of that. When I told them to change them, they didn't say sorry. The spaces we sat were dirty too, there were lots of crumbles! The table was wiped, but there were some oil stains nevertheless. When we used our first napkins because the food was really messy, they were not replaced because the waiters are not attentive to care about that!
The portions are big, but the food is really average, so I think Cay Tre is very overpriced, especially if you add bad service and atmosphere. I can find great dishes from the same region's cuisine (Korean, Chinese, Japanese etc) for much more affordable prices and a better service, in a cleaner venue. I don't recommend here! I...
Read moreSunday evening, after an afternoon of Pimms in the sun, we strolled down Old street to try and find this place. It was busy upstairs so we were seated downstairs which was empty at the time. The girls we were with both ordered the Pho, one is not a fan of anything too spicy and she ordered the beef and loved it - the other loves garlic and said she may have wanted it a bit more garlicy. I had the vermicelli salad with prawns and loved it so much! Such delicious, fresh, sweet and sour flavours - nice amount of mint and vegetables and the prawns were sweet and fresh - it made me very happy. I had no Idea that Vietnamese made curry but my boyfriend got the lamb curry, which looked small, but was wonderfully rich and full of flavour. We started with the Vietnamese spring rolls, probably our highlight - so wonderfully crispy, wrapped in a lettuce leaf and dipped in the sweet and sour type sauce they gave us -YUM. My Matcha shake was so good and the vietnamese coffee looked like it had a reasonable amount of condensed milk. The chocolate lava dessert was a decadent but necessary ending. Service is short and sweet, no faffing which was nice - not a cheap place though. Definitely recommend a try if you know what Vietnamese food is like and if you feel like a super tasty...
Read moreI have been to the Cay Tre in soho but it is my first visit to this old street branch. May be it is a bad timing..it was raining heavy outside. I managed to get the table quickly and seated...and I saw 4 woman's with one small baby keep crying and crying...like Beijing opera. These 4 woman's are non stop gobber...treating the restaurant like FISH MARKET..they dont know how to behave and shouting to each other very loudly rather than speak softly. Later, I saw a few customers started to leave the restaurant..I wonder if they have enough of this Beijing opera show... OMG...the baby keep crying and then loud music started to turn on to the maximum volume...extremely loud like nightclub. it coupling with 4 vocal opera noise..it is so dreadful. .Although the music is so loud but it still doesn't affected these gobbers to stop talking...i noticed the foods is serving on their table...but they still half eating half chatting...like eager to get the foods choking on their throat...For god sake, i just want to quickly finish my meal and get out from this hell place....never again although I have no complaints on their foods. I understand it is not the restaurant fault...but it is a nightmare...
