The food at On the Bab is alright for Korean food. It's decent, somewhat expensive for what you get portion-wise, but good for getting an gentle introduction to Korean food. It is not what I would consider totally authentic or traditional. It would be similar to the way in which Chipotle is Mexican food. We had the japchae appetizer (which seemed weird to me as it's usually a dinner in most places I have been to), jeon (quite small, they are typically twice the size, even as an appetizer), the toppoki (rice cakes in spicy red sauce) and then the budae jjigae (army stew). The quality of the food was okay, though it wasn't as spicy or as flavorful as it could be. It all seemed rather pedestrian and the toppoki sauce and the stew seemed a bit one-note and didn't have much depth to the flavor. Additionally the japchae could have had much more in the way of vegetables. The jeon was tasty though and I would recommend it. All of the portions were petite but did taste fine and the service was good and the atmosphere was fine, but felt more like a bar or a pub than a restaurant. I think ultimately that it is probably better as a place to have a few beers and have "snacks" rather than a place to have a proper meal that you can sit and enjoy for any length of time.

Wow, what a place, what a find, what speedy service but.......bring that wallet. On the Bap is a quaint, fast food restaurant, with high end quality goods and taste and quality that matches and exceeds some expectations for the area! It was a genuine delight. I ordered the spicy chicken bim box and a the petite, small portion of sweet, chilli fried chicken. First off, the fried chicken are not on the bone pieces but more like smaller pieces, and they were to die for! Crispy, sweet with a slight spice, they were legendary and will ne getting the medium for £15 next time. Could just eat these with that lovely spicy mayo! The box meal was dense, I mean it weighed the size of my 4yr old. You get extra veg and an egg in the bim box which was only £1.50 more so why not. Tasty chicken, rice was perfect, veggies were tender and had a great taste. Lastly the service, I expected a 10 minute wait when given the buzzer. It went off 60 seconds later and so did everyone else's, so the food comes thick, fast and fresh. Absolite delight! Highly recommended for a treat.

Had lunch here the other day with my husband and everything was absolutely delicious! The seating inside can be a little cramped so just a heads up. Servers are also attentive and quick to help. Food is also pricey but I’m sure it’s because it’s in Shoreditch so you’re paying more for the location. I had the YangYum Chicken with half of both flavors, my husband had On the Rice with Bulgogi Beef, and we both got the On the Buns with Bulgogi Beef to share as well. The Yang Yum Chicken comes with both bone in and boneless chicken. We both preferred the Soy Ginger flavor over the Sweet Spicy, but that’s just personal preference because both were tasty. I wish they had the option of letting us pick bone in or boneless because that make the chicken perfect. My husband also loved his rice bowl and said he’d get it again any day. As for the buns we were too full so we took them home for later. Overall On the Bap was amazing and I would defiantly come back again to try other dishes they have to offer.

Evil, greedy and ego-fueled place.

Let me tell you the story that made me not come back to this place anymore, and why you should not as well:

I started going here more often because it was rather close to my office, and I like Korean food. So I enter this place order a normal bibimbap menu, which was £8.5. And I was being charged £10.5, to which I asked calmly why. I was then told it was because of the extra tuna, for which I replied that I didn't order extra tuna. The manager eventually tells me (in a frustrated and angry manner) that they needed to update the paper menus. And I calmly look at the big menu above the counter and notice that the prices were indeed £8.5, which means that she mostly likely was lying.

Later that week I come back here and I see that all the menus are £10.5 for the same meals I saw earlier that week. Which is fine, perhaps they really did not update, and I am fine with that, instead I decide to go for the meal with bacon, which is £8.9 (I usually don't even have bacon). The staff was no longer smilling and talking with me, and I was forced to wait outside in the cold with my colleague while waiting for the meal (usually I would wait inside, also, that day the place was not even that full).

I come back to my office and as I open the box I see a very small egg with a micro-sized yolt (apologies for not having taken a picture so that you could see for yourself), the bean spouts were cold, and there was absolutely no bacon in that box. In fact, there was nothing else, I wouldn't also be surprised if they spitted or done something else to my meal.

Final observations: They could have simply left the menus the same and saved on printing (because it seems like no one was questioning why they were being charged extra)

They could have stayed with the same misleading effect of having £8.5 menus but now they have to show £10.5

They could have kept me as a regular happy customer

Finally they could have simply accepted the fact that they were, in fact, misleading and evil by tricking customers into paying more. Instead, they decided to not speak back to me last time I went there and they proceeded to give me a horrible meal. All of this to feed their ego and closed-minded thinking.

The only reason I wrote this review was to have the staff members at this place think about what they did, and rethink their actions next time. And also to prevent future customers (such as yourself reading this right now) to avoid being tricked by the staff members at this establishment.

The food is not bad, I give them that, but I refuse to come back to this place for the reasons...

Having grown up in Asia my standards and expectations of Asian food in other countries is higher because I know what good Asian food tastes like, the flavours, the aroma, the spice, etc. My girlfriend and I were on the bus just cruising around exploring and we saw this place, so we got off and went straight there because the sign said Korean street food. Now, to get all the good things out of the way, the staff were nice, the place was cool, hipster-ish, and clean. Air-conditioning is a nice touch too. Now onto the bad. Yaz and I love babimbap (Korean hot stone mixed rice dish), we used to eat it multiple times a week when we were living in Singapore (recently moved here to London), and we would get one for 8 Singapore dollars, about £4. Now I expected it to cost more because we're in England, and replicating good Asian flavours is harder across the waters... Well... I assume... But that's where my issues begin. Not only were the babimbap we ordered lackluster, but they were actually cold when given to us. It was also very apparent that they were precooked as the beef looked it, the egg was obviously precooked, and again, it was all cold. Not stone cold, I'll admit there was a hint of warmth, but it was overall cold. These cost £10.50 each.... Which in Singapore is about 21 dollars, give or take. For a single dish, that's rediculous. But this is London, so annoying as it is, its how it is. But because of the quality of the dish, I will not be getting it again, if I ever did return to this place. I actually went out of my way to Google this place just to find a way to review it quickly for you to read. The next issue I had was the drink we ordered. We ordered something called plum punch, which sounded nice on the menu. Plum, honey and soda water, sounds nice, but it was sickly sweet and very difficult to drink as the bottom solution was so thick I couldn't suck it through the straw. Okay, so back to some goods, the Kimchi pancake, was good, albeit small, the taste was good. Could've been a bit spicier though. Also the fried dumplings were good too, we had the prawn ones. Overall I wasn't impressed and probably won't go back. Although, there was this spicy chicken wing dish that did look nice, but we didn't order, and it seemed to be the main thing people were getting around us. I may go back to try that dish, but I don't think that'll be...

As someone who has been to many korean resturants and has eaten home made korean food and enjoys a good food I'm writing this review , This resturant is a vibe , food was not anywhere near a good food , we ordered almost everything on the menu so I can write a honest review , the chicken was ok but that was it , the salad we ordered was just shaved veggie raw with bowl of rice underneath with no dressing , I can't stress enough , it was with no dressing , tasteless and I can't even believe chef slowed it to be on the menu , even if this authentic , as an establishment they have to select a good that worth the money people are paying for. The kimchi jjigae was like a soup , there was barely 2 tbsp of kimchi cabbage in it with 2 slim shaves of pork , not worth the money rice comes separate, the rest of the starters were the same absolutely no taste , believe me if you want to enjoy food this is not the resturant to go , if you want to use outside and the be seated like cool young crowd then yes you get what you want , but save yourself and your money from being wasted and go to another place that respects your money and gives you what you deserve for the price

Also they told us that they use the same oil to fry everything, we had a vegeterian in our group and she could not find anything on the menu , the staff had no idea what goes on their food.

Vegetarians and vegans has to avoid this resturant what so ever

But it's cool they serve in metal bowls and cheap plastic dishes with wooden spoon

By the way we paid £30 per person so it's not on the...
