Read moreI really wish I would have loved this place! It's 100% plant-based, excellent location, but was lacking in customer service and in my opinion it was trying to be too hipster to the point that it feels quite exclusive and not as casual as I'd expect a cafe in this location to be. Just too try hard.
I came in via the Redchurch St entrance from where the location of the cashier isn't immediately obvious. So when I saw the barrista I just waited there. I didn't want to interrupt so I waited and waited and waited. On the 3rd beverage they were making, 2 people started queueing up about 1m to my right. Then someone showed up to take their order. I was really disappointed that the barrista didn't tell me I was waiting in the wrong spot, totally ignored me, and I had a similar experience with the cashier up to the point when I was ready to leave after receiving my To Good to Go Magic back. While preparing my bag they also said something, I thought they were speaking to me, they told me they were multi-tasking by speaking to the barrista. Which is fine, but the tone was not friendly or apologetic, but sounded more like I was disturbing them. They were nice when saying goodbye, but at this point I had waited ages, I was ignored, and I felt told off.
On the trying too hard to be hipster note - for me this came via the loud electronic music. This paired with being ignored made me feel unwelcome and like I wasn't good enough for this place.
Gonna give 2 stars because they're plantbased and seem to have a reasonably diverse menu and they do Too Good to Go to...
Read moreProbably the best cafe I've found in a year of living in London. The atmosphere is calm and clean and cozy. The drinks and food are always spot on. The service is lovely. And my favorite thing is that their laptop policy is: perfect.
I'm a digital nomad, and someone who works from cafes regularly. I don't have an office, because my business is fully remote, and staying at home all the time would lead to a tanked mental health and social isolation. But as remote work popularizes, so many cafes are managing remote workers incorrectly. There are some cafes that have become incredibly rude and aggressive: I've been kicked out of cafes, latte half finished, upon opening my laptop (I'll never be back). On the other hand, I've been to cafes with a friend for a nice catch-up, and found every table full and the atmosphere eerily quiet because everyone is working. Also not good.
Gecko has achieved the balance. They have two levels, and during weekdays, downstairs is laptop friendly (and public about it) and upstairs is reserved for social time. And on weekends, the big tables downstairs are for laptops, and everywhere else is social. The result is there is always space for me, and I don't feel awkward about it. I can come and get work done. I can come and chat with a friend. Gecko is happy to have me. And their vibes remain immaculate, a great blend of light socializing and chatter and some folks getting some work done as well.
Cheers to Gecko. Hopefully more cafes can learn from how you manage...
