As the temperature drops in London and scarves make their debut, I’m once again on the hunt for comfort food. This time, I found myself at Gold Mine in Queensway, a long-standing institution renowned for Cantonese cuisine. After 20 years of excellence, Gold Mine has earned a reputation as a go-to spot for roast meats.
🦆Special Roast Duck Cantonese Style A signature dish that lives up to the hype. The duck was perfectly crispy on the outside, while the meat inside remained tender and juicy. A standout.
🍜Fried Vermicelli Singapore Style These noodles were a revelation. The deep umami flavors were rich yet balanced, and the noodles were coated in just the right amount of glaze—never greasy. A complex, addictive dish.
🍚Special Fried Rice Fried rice can often feel dry, but Gold Mine’s version was far from it. The rice was coated in a luscious coat that amplified the umami, and the combination of pork and shrimp brought it to perfection. A 10/10.
🥬Pak Choi in Oyster Sauce The vegetables were cooked to perfection—tender yet crunchy, with a velvety oyster sauce that added an umami touch. Simple but superb. However, perhaps a bit steep at £14 for a bit of pak choi.
Unfortunately, by the time we arrived at 7pm, they had already run out of Char Siu (BBQ Pork) and crispy belly pork, so I’ll be returning to try them. I also noticed that their hot and sour soup and seafood dishes looked equally enticing. The service was warm and efficient, with staff who made sure we felt welcomed throughout our meal. Gold Mine delivers exactly what you want: no frills, just authentic Cantonese comfort food. A must-visit.

Read moreGold Mine on Queensway is an absolute gem for Chinese cuisine lovers! Its location is incredibly convenient, just a short walk from Bayswater Station.
We had a booking for a Friday night but arrived slightly late due to traffic. The staff were understanding, ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience. From the outside, the restaurant may not seem that large, but it actually spans multiple levels. While the ground floor has a bustling atmosphere with closely arranged tables, there are also separate rooms for those looking for a more intimate setting. We were seated towards the inside of the restaurant, which offered a bit more privacy and made for a comfortable dining experience.
The atmosphere at Gold Mine is relaxed and casual—nothing overly fancy in terms of decor, but warm and inviting. The focus here is undoubtedly on the food.
The menu is extensive, offering a huge variety of dishes, including different meats, vegetarian options, and a special dumpling selection. The food quality was great, and every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious. We started with the spinach dumplings, pork dumplings, and turnip cakes from the special menu. The grilled turnip cakes were a standout—crispy on the outside, soft inside, and had an interesting taste. A must-try! The roasted duck was simply exceptional—perfectly crispy skin with juicy, tender meat. We initially ordered a quarter portion to sample it, but the team generously upgraded us to a half, which was a lovely surprise. The braised tofu stew was another highlight, rich and full of flavour, and the vermicelli were also pretty good. We paired our meal with delicate, light tea, which complemented the flavours beautifully.
Service was very good - attentive and impressively fast.
We had a lovely time and we will definitely be returning....
Read moreI had passed by Gold Mine many times and noticed there always seemed to be a queue of people waiting outside during the day. I checked online and found they are popular for their dim sum but also their roast meat. I decided to pay them a visit as I love duck and pork dishes.
My first impression was good as they were happy for me to make a reservation for one person and were very responsive to my requests.
I had a three-course meal of Deep Fried Crispy Aromatic Duck, Roast Meat Rice (BBQ Pork and Crispy Pork) and Banana Fritters. I had also planned to have the House Special Bean Curd but had no room after my main course.
All the dishes I had were delicious. The duck was probably the best I have ever had. It was crispy on the outside and the meat was not at all dry but succulent. I had no problem finishing all the pancakes. I asked for egg fried rice and it was well cooked, along with the two types of pork. The pork meats were full of flavour but not overpowering. The banana fritters were a great end to the meal. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The service was also very good. The servers were attentive but not at all intrusive and I did not have to wait very long at all between courses.
One thing to note is that the restaurant was rather noisy and not the best place for a quiet or intimate meal. I was glad that I had my noise cancelling headphones with me. I would also recommend making a reservation, as it was very busy.
I definitely recommend Gold Mine if you fancy having Chinese cuisine, especially their roast meat dishes. I hope to make another visit soon to try their dim sum, as it...
