We visited Hobsons Bayswater as a family this Saturday evening 29.5.2023 for dinner. We are frequent diners at Hobsons in SoHo, and have enjoyed every visit. We decided to try the Bayswater outlet for a change; big mistake! We have dined all over the world from Michelin restaurants to holes in wall diners, but today I believe we’ve found the worst wait staff that we have seen in the last three decades! The three girls (but one in particular in a black tracksuit) serving were disinterested, rude, and downright rude. They ignored waves for service by us and the other diners, slammed cutlery and plates down, dismissive of our attempts to be polite and courteous. The food itself (chips were rubbish and soggy, and onion rings were ok) and the fish in particular was fresh and well fried. But the service, or lack of it is totally unacceptable. At a time when the cost of living is hitting everyone hard, and all we are trying to do is have an evening out as a break, and to in the process help the london F n B industry in London, it’s inexcusable that Hobsons would employ staff like whom we saw today to ruin our day and insult people who just want a decent evening out. We’ve recommended many of our friends to go to the restaurant for the best fish and chips in the UK, but we are going to stop doing that unless Hobsons does something to address the level of service in their establishments. To cap off I spoke to the girl serving our table and asked why she was behaving in the above manner and she casually mentioned that restaurant work is hard, she’s was tired and the restaurant was busy…. No apology whatsoever. I told her she should have just stayed home if that was the case and not ruin someone else’s night. For the record there were three small tables of diners and two girls working the floor. What a mess of a...
Read moreVisited Hobson's a couple of days ago, as I am visiting London with my sister and we were eager to try some fish and chips. We arrived around 4pm on Monday and it was actually quite empty for sit-ins aside from one other customer. There was a bit of foot traffic for take-away. We were initially drawn to this place when doing research for good fish n chippies as my sister has food sensitivities and requires gluten free meals. Surprisingly this spot had gluten free options, to their regular fish menu and some vegan options. Also, their fries are fried seperarely making them gluten free as well. This is exceptional as it allowed for both us to indulge! I ordered the regular cod (£10.95) and my sister order the gluten free cod(£11.95). In the photo below my sister's plate is the one with the cup of water. Let me emphasive that the fish was fresh, tender and delicious!!!! The batter used wasn't too thick but added the perfect amount of crisp-ness and paired perfectly with the tartar sauce, malt vinegar and lemon provided. It was delicious, we were not dissapointed. The fries were hand cut, fried to perfection and potatoey (if you know what I mean). They offered options in terms ordering fries, as they were separate to the fish. We ordered fries for two (about £3) which was a great portion for the both of us. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. The atmophere was bright, clean and welcoming. The service was also great. When I visit London again I will...
Read moreWhile I was prepared to eat fish for once just to have a dish that London is famous for, I was elated to discover that they have vegan "fish" here! This is not some pre-fab frozen product that they reheat, however. While I would have been more than happy with a gardein-style frozen fillet, I really appreciated the effort and creativity that went into the fish which is banana blossoms, peppers, and zucchini which is sauteed then wrapped in rice paper, then battered and fried. It tasted amazing, so satisfying and reminded me of the real thing. We also split an order of onion rings and mushy peas which I liked a lot. If you're not used to eating a lot of fried food you may find the onion rings hold a lot of oil in the batter, but they are really light and crispy! The peas were also really good, tender yet still green. The female server was extremely friendly and helpful, you feel welcomed by her. The gentleman at the front doing the frying was a little less warm but not outright unfriendly. If I had to give any constructive feedback it would be that my chips seemed a little wrinkled as if they had been sitting in a warming drawer for a while, so those were disappointing. I was definitely looking forward to the chips part of my fish and chips. The beer was cold and went great with the food, so happy to be able to sit down and eat it all together rather than doing takeaway. All in all I highly recommend Hobson's, I had a fantastic experience that I won't...
