I, like others, was very keen to try this place after watching the Netflix episode based on the founder Guirong Wei. We had a basic lunch, some vege dumplings, chicken with peppers and spicy sauce and some BangBang vege flat noodles. While the food was okay, isadly it was quite underwhelming. The noodles themselves were quite tasty but the sauces and flavourings not so, they all tasted a little on the bland side. The vege dumpling also a disappointment, a little soggy and not so flavoursome. It was such a shame after reading the mixed reviews and the great Netflix episode.
There is also very little choice for veggies with many meat noodle dishes. Considering the number of veggies around these days, I think this should be addressed. While the waitress was quite sweet, after serving our food she was not so attentive and shortly after we were served, the staff all sat down for their lunch too, almost forgetting there were still customers requiring some attention. One big surprise was that all the prices shown were excluding VAT, something I have never experienced as in a restaurant for a very very long time. As this is compulsory, why would it not be included in the menu prices. So be aware, everything is 20% more expensive than the price you see, then service on top, though not compulsory. All a shame but I will sadly, not be...
Read moreI believe this is the second branch that has opened, with the original store being the one near Russell Square. I have been to that one several times and the quality here is very similar.
The handmade biangbiang noodles are very good. I suggest either the vegetarian bianbiang noodles, the Xinjiang style chicken noodles or the cold liangpi noodles with sesame sauce (you can get these with or without chicken - I don't think the chicken is necessary).
The pork pot sticker dumplings are better than the ones in the original store and are in the harder to find cylindrical shape, rather than the usual crescent shape a la gyoza. I liked the texture and the flavour of the filling a lot.
The staff were polite and friendly. It was a shame to see the store still so quiet but hopefully it gets busier as it becomes more established. I did visit a bit early for dinner.
If you are looking for an English-style "Chinese" meal please do not order from here and leave a bad review as I see one person has done already. They do have some of those dishes for the serially unadventurous, but I would stick to what this place specialises in, instead.
What you can get here is authentic Xi'an and other Chinese regional food for a fair (London-wise) price, in a pleasant environment. Give it a go - I am sure you will enjoy it if you approach it with...
Read moreFinally there is a Master Wei in this part of London and that has to be good news for all the west Londoners. We have been dining regularly at the previous two restaurants by the talented Master Wei but harder now with a young child and fewer trips to central London. We tried the newly opened Master Wei literally by Hammersmith station on a Sunday night and the restaurant was heaving pretty much 5:30/6 onwards till we left. Quality of the food was top notch as always and all the classics we loved are there on the menu, with a few more exciting new dishes to try too! There were three families and 11 of us including a friend's mum visiting from Sichuan. If you know a Chinese family, you will know Chinese mums are the most difficult to impress as far as food is concerned and impressed she was! Her praises ran from the cold dishes to the hot dishes, from the Rou Jia Mo (the Chinese burger but better!) to the Biang Xiang noodles! We will sure be...
