AROUND THE WORLD...
On Wednesday the 2nd of October 1872, Phileas J. Fogg, Esq. embarked upon his journey around the world. He had wagered with fellow members of the Reform Club that he would be able to complete this trip within eighty days. They thought him mad, but Fogg was quite the gambling man. He was well-versed in the game of whist and not one who enjoyed losing… nor to be found wrong. He was therefore determined to prove them wrong and complete his trip around the world in eighty days.
MAYFAIR BEGINNINGS
Five years ago, Phileas J. Fogg, Esq. decided to open the doors of his Mayfair home to the public. Trusted companions, fellow explorers and loyal patrons were welcomed into the residence to cast their eyes upon his legendary collection. Guests could enjoy hospitality at its best, as Passepartout and the household staff tirelessly waited on them hand and foot. Very soon, his residence became a place famed for its exquisite libations and exciting entertainment. His residence was no longer just his home, but a prestigious Mayfair watering hole.
THE TAVERN
Just over two years later, Mr Fogg’s Aunt Gertrude sadly passed away, leaving behind her home on St. Martin’s Lane. Situated in the heart of theatre-land, she was incredibly fond of the performing arts and well-respected within London’s theatrical circles. Much to everyone’s surprise, she left the ground floor of her home to her lifelong devoted housekeeper, Fanny McGee. In memory of the late Aunt Gertrude, Fanny decided to create a tavern where like-minded folk and lovers of the arts could enjoy hearty British grub and no-nonsense tipples. Phileas inherited her apartment upstairs and mused what to do with the floor above this rowdy tavern.
THE GIN PARLOUR
On the corner of St Martin’s Lane and New Row, located just above the downstairs tavern, Mr Fogg decided to create a Gin Parlour. It was a place he could proudly showcase the selection of more than 150 wondrous gins that he had collected over time on his global adventures. It became a sanctuary where he and his friends could escape from the hustle and bustle of downstairs. Hosting everything from gin tastings to afternoon teas, the parlour became a place of refined enjoyment.
THE HOUSE OF BOTANICALS
Three years passed, and during this time Mr Fogg was fortuitous in making the acquaintance of some of the world’s most valued scientists, botanists and cultivators of herbaceous wonders. Ever the pedantic man, Phileas insisted Passepartout kept a careful record and sample of every seed and plant-cutting he’d ever successfully collected. Electrically-charged flowers, carnivorous potted plants, medicinal tinctures and exquisite effusions of floral perfume, it was quite the collection indeed. Henceforth, Fogg acquired a house in Fitzrovia with the means of housing his amazing assortment of articles. It boasted high ceilings suitable for the most towering of stems, and windows large enough to nurse even the most sun-craving of his exotic collection, allowing the curious to bear witness to his vast collection.

Read moreThis past Sunday, my family and I embarked on a flavourful adventure at Mr Fogg's City Tavern in Liverpool Street, London to celebrate my recent birthday along with my cousin's. From the moment we stepped through the doors, we were transported into the whimsical world of Phileas Fogg's globetrotting tale, with decor so exquisitely themed and designed that no expense was spared in recreating this immersive experience.
The atmosphere was rich with character and tastefully appointed details, setting the perfect backdrop for our celebratory Sunday roast. At the bar, mixologists Artem and Ernesto dazzled us with their craft cocktail artistry. Ernesto, in particular, deserves the highest praise for his warm hospitality and thoughtful approach to catering our libations to our individual tastes. After patiently inquiring about our flavour preferences, he expertly blended Cachaca, Wray and Nephew rum, black pepper, limes, and other magical ingredients into a pure cocktail bliss.
Our servers Andrea and Mia provided attentive and seamless service, ensuring our party's every need was met with efficiency and care. The management's presence was also appreciated, fostering an environment of quality experience.
While every dish seemed a tempting voyage, I opted for the Jamaican Jerk Chicken with some initial hesitation that was immediately extinguished upon first bite. A flavor festival erupted in my mouth, reminiscent of Remy and Anton Ego's euphoric epiphany in Ratatouille! The perfectly seasoned jerk chicken was an absolute triumph, though the potatoes were a tad over-crisped. That minor misstep was easily forgiven as the melody of spices, vegetables, and rich gravy danced across my palate.
Mr Fogg's City Tavern has truly crafted a dining experience that matches the spirit of adventure found in Jules Verne's classic tale. I cannot recommend it enough and eagerly await my next delicious voyage abroad courtesy of their talented culinary...
Read moreRecently, I had the pleasure of experiencing a delightful Sunday roast dinner at Mr Fogg’s City Tavern, and I must say, it was a truly memorable culinary experience.
To begin with, the atmosphere on a Sunday afternoon was warm, Staff were very polite and inviting. The Sunday roast tradition was alive and well. The dining area was tastefully decorated, evoking a cosy, quirky yet homely feel that perfectly complemented the traditional nature of the meal.
The star of the show was undoubtedly the roast lamb. Cooked to perfection, the lamb was tender, succulent, and bursting with flavour. The meat was beautifully seasoned, accompanying the lamb were classic roast potatoes, perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, along with a medley of seasonal vegetables cooked to perfection and a giant Yorkie.
What truly elevated this dining experience was the expertise of the head chef. It was evident that the chef had a deep understanding of flavours and cooking techniques. The lamb was a testament to this, showcasing impeccable culinary skills. Each bite was a testament to the chef's dedication to quality and taste.
To round off this exceptional meal, we were treated to a heavenly apple crumble for dessert. The chef's creation was nothing short of perfection. The apple filling was wonderfully spiced, topped with a golden-brown, buttery crumble that provided the perfect textural contrast, served with a generous amount of hot custard, which added a delightful richness to every spoonful. This dessert was a symphony of flavours.
Overall, my experience at Mr Fogg’s City Tavern was 10/10. The attention to detail and commitment to quality made this dining experience truly memorable. If you're looking for a traditional Sunday roast with a touch of culinary brilliance, look no further than Mr Fogg’s City Tavern. I cannot recommend it...
