Mr Fogg’s is a very popular chain of bars in London. Starting off in the lovely cocktail bar in Mayfair five years ago – Mr Fogg’s Residence – it now has two venues in Covent Garden and one in Fitzrovia. The bars are named after the famous Phileas J. Fogg, Esq. who embarked upon his journey around the world on 2 October 1872. He had a bet with members of the Reform Club that he could complete his trip within 80 days. Cue detectives, crime, love and surprise, Mr Fogg somehow managed to win his wager! We visited MrFogg’s cocktail bar in Mayfair on Bruton Lane for their Tipsy Tea! You could easily walk past this bar as is it off the beaten track! Look out for the colourful flowers outside and the gentleman greeting you at the door. The bar is beautifully decorated with lots of memorabilia from Mr Fogg’s travels including a hot air balloon, animals, clocks, compasses and lots of other gadgets and devices. Tipsy tea is served from 3pm on Sundays and you can choose from a spirit based teapot cocktail or a champagne cocktails. You can choose from a teapot each for £40pp or you can upgrade to bottomless spirit cocktails for £62pp or bottomless champagne and spirit cocktails for £72pp. We were greeted with a passion fruit and wine cocktail on arrival with a hint of pineapple. It was really rather refreshing! Following this we had “A Tropical Tincture” with green tea, passion fruit and mango infused in Reyka vodka, aperol aperitif, homemade lavender and orange syrup, passion fruit juice and lime juice. This was delicious and a little sour. We also had “The Drunken Duchess” with Reyka Vodka, creme de mure, cranberry, lemon and veuve clicquot champagne, which was much sweeter. For afternoon tea we had a chicken tikka wrap, ham and piccalilli sandwich, cream cheese and cucumber sandwich and a smoked salmon and cream cheese roll. For my veggie friend, she had sun dried tomatoes and cream cheese and olive and hummus. The cakes were absolutely fantastic! We had pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart) – not as good as Lisbon obviously but still tasty. The red velvet cake was so moist and had the perfect amount of icing and the chocolate brownie was so rich and gooey!! The home-made plum cake was great and tasted quite like a cherry bakewell. For once I actually managed to finish my afternoon tea (!) but it was enough! Whilst having tipsy tea we were entertained by a pianist playing live music with a really good variety of songs! There was also a magician performing tricks which made me very excited! For the atmosphere, food and service, the tipsy tea was definitely worth £40 per person. We loved Alex who served us – he had a great sense of humour and was very accommodating. Mr Fogg’s is one of the most creative bars in London and I would happily return!

We had a massively disappointing and rather appalling experience at Mr Fogg’s Residence, and I certainly won’t be returning. Aware that the bar only holds your table for 15 minutes, we called at the time of our booking to explain we would be late. When we arrived at the bar at 9:45pm, there were two members of staff at the door. There was one blonde-hair male door attendant who was particularly rude, unnecessarily sassy, and very unhelpful. He informed us, after checking inside, that our table was no longer available. We asked about our £40 booking deposit, and very quickly two managers came out, to tell us they’d already marked as ‘no shows’ and charged us the £40. We explained we’d called ahead, and they said we could call up the next day to arrange a refund. all three members of staff said there was no room inside, and sent us on our way. I totally understand that it was a busy night in London, and most places have a 15 minute hold on the tables before giving it away. We were fine with that, and happy we could get our deposit back, as we had called ahead, spoken with a member of staff at Mr Fogg’s Residence, and turned up, even if late. Our issue was with the attitude of the staff - one in particular, and what followed. As we were walking away, a fourth person (who may have been the actual manager) came running up to us saying they had actually found us a table, and could seat us. When we came in, the place was half empty. There were various tables completely available, and in the 30 minutes we were there for, it only got emptier, making all the above entirely unnecessary. We shouldn’t have bothered really, because the atmosphere was disappointing, the decor feels dusty and lacklustre, and despite the interesting range of cocktails including a range of vintage spirits from the 1950s, they all tasted rather weak. The tables and chairs were also incredibly low down to the floor, making it was impossible to fit our legs under the table, and very uncomfortable. Mr Fogg’s is in a great location, so I would urge you to consider the host of fabulous restaurants and bars in the vicinity where the staff are much friendlier and you’ll have a considerably more exciting time.

A few weeks back I was invited to Mr Fogg’s 5th-anniversary party, can you believe that it has been 5 whole years of Mr Fogg’s gracing us with their innovative cocktails and theatrics? I was super excited to attend as I have not been to their Mayfair branch yet, and I absolutely love their gin parlour in Covent Garden. One of the reasons why I enjoy going to Mr Fogg’s is the dramatics of the bar. It is full of historic trinkets and artefacts from the Victorian explorer. From a stuffed parrot to a hot air balloon, if the mouth quenching cocktails do not entice you, the décor of the restaurant will. I arrived at the anniversary party, just after 7 pm as I was running late from work. When I arrived, the celebrations were already in full swing with live entertainment playing at the front of the bar. Mr Fogg’s were offering liberations of Hendricks Gin, however, I was still supporting my commitment to dry January, so I would have to try a non-alcoholic drink. I could literally cry my eyes out because the drink choices sounded like just what I needed after a long day of work. However, I made an oath to go 31 days without alcohol and I was sticking to it. Therefore, I chose the temperate liberations, a choice of refreshing non-alcoholic cocktails. There were two choices; Berry Straight & Narrow and Red Herring. My favourite had to be Red Herring, which is a mixture of rhubarb with apple juice, fresh lime juice, rose water, agave syrup and citrus foam. From the first sip, the citrus foam graced my mouth, tasting and tangy but refreshing taste, all it needed was a little shot of gin. The second non-alcoholic drink was the Berry straight & Narrow, which was made from raspberry and blackberry puree, cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, topped with ginger ale. I also loved this mocktail but was a little on the sweeter side. This was the first time, during my dry January period that I actually enjoyed a mocktail, as the mocktails at Mr Fogg’s are so imaginative.

I have no words to describe my experience at Mr. Fogg Residence. Everything, literally everything was absolutely brilliant: the location is breathtaking, it feels like jumping back to the Victorian era but with a bizarre vibe in it, it really reminded me of “Penny Dreadful” tv show! (If you don’t know what it is, you better check it out). Now, the drinks. The best drinks I ever had in London, so different and so many to choose from! The artwork on the menu is stunning and the attention to details is out of this world, even the QR code to scan was presented as an invention of Tesla. Honestly, just brilliant. I totally recommend the Treasure Highland, it comes with Honeycomb and let me tell you, it is the most brilliant thing to do. Now, let’s talk about the service. A special mention goes to Angela, the incredible, amazing waitress that gave a twist to my (and our) experience. I was celebrating my graduation with friends and she looked after us so nicely, alway topping up our water and doing check backs to ensure everything was perfect. On top of it all, she showed her amazing skills as an entertainer other than waitress, making us have fun and feel valued. She also brought a free drink for myself as a graduation gift, introducing it with a crazy lovely story about Mr. Fogg not being able to be with us but sending his regards through the absolutely incredible drink. I don’t know if she wrote the card, but I also got a Telegram (proper Victorian) signed by Mr. Fogg who, once again, was cheering my graduation. Angela is honestly the best waitress and human being we ever met and that just adds the cherry on top of the best place we’ve ever been. I just can’t wait to be back!!!!

Yeah well, people talk about the price of cocktails there. Yes ok, maybe 15~16£ are a lot but genuinely, everything there was worth the price. Literally everything. Costumes, atmosphere, service, art, great taste. Guys, if I had them, I would give you 100£ per drink if I get this every time. So well done everyone but Angela, you...
