🚇 Bethnal Green 🍺 £5.60 Amstel ❤️ A versatile Bethnal Green boozer. . The Old George is located amongst the hustle and bustle on Bethnal Green Road. The nearest tube is Bethnal Green which is only a five minute walk away. . This pub is believed to have been present by 1703 and by the mid-nineteenth century was trading as the George IV. It was rebuilt in its present form in 1880. . The decor here is rustic with exposed brickwork walls and a dark wood floor running throughout. There is plenty of low level seating and banquette sofas around the perimeter walls. Down the right hand side is a good size servery with barrels above advertising upcoming events. If you like your live sport you’re in luck, there are large screens showing Premier League, Six nations and the like. Even though this isn’t a riverside pub there is a slight nautical feel to the place. A big bonus here is the large beer garden at the rear which gets very busy in the warmer months. . The beer line up was decent and included craft and cask options. Being the boring fart that I am I chose a pint of Amstel, my pint was very agreeable and under six quid. There is a good selection of comfort food on the food menu, burgers and pizzas are the order of the day, the food did smell good. . The atmosphere was relaxed on this Saturday afternoon with a dozen or so punters in for the footy. There were a few tables with reserved signs on which I’m not a fan of, some pubs seem to operate this way to guarantee business, so I can see why. The crowd was mix of all ages until about twenty young lads walked in which lowered the aggregate some what. This pub livens up in the evenings and has DJ and Karaoke nights throughout the month. . I last visited @theoldgeorgebg back in 2017 and not a lot has changed. My review was positive then and I can report that my review is positive now. There is plenty to enjoy at this boozer, get this one on the list. . ℹ️ Info correct on...

Not a great experience...

We were in the neighborhood for a ticketed event on the 1st of Aug. We had to grab a quick bite, the pub was literally empty (6.50pm) and looked nice so we've thought: why not, we've got plenty of time. The beer on tap hasn't been available because of some gas issues (happens to the best) but the bartender took an order of 2 x fish & chips. We've paid and waited. After 30min of wait time I started to get a bit anxious as our event was starting at 8pm and we still had to get there. The bartender (Charlotte I think) said that the food is coming soon. After additional few minutes (35-40min wait time) we simply had to leave. Not sure what caused such a huge wait for fish & chips in an EMPTY pub, maybe those has issues? Doesn't really matter. Everyone has a bad day sometimes. We’ve explained the situation and asked the bartender for a refund and she agreed it made sense. She was very kind but must have been new (?) because couldn't process the credit card refund. She said she cannot give us cash instead. There was another guy at the bar which (as he said) "worked for the same company" and he was trying to help out the lady to reverse the transaction. He also was super nice and even called someone to get some knowledge on how to reverse it. Unfortunately it was again taking minutes and we simply had to leave. We simply left the pub after apologizing for the trouble and saying that we didn't expect the food to take 40+min in an empty pub. I've said that they seemed to be very honest and reasonable so I would simply trust them to reverse the transaction "eventually". Charlotte and the other person helping her were really trying to sort things out. Unfortunately I can see that the credit card transaction has been posted and hasn't been reversed in any way. Now I will need to go through the charge back procedure with a bank which is unpleasant for everyone and a huge...

If I could leave zero stars I would due to the unnacceptable and extremely rude behaviour of the deputy manager whose name I unfortunately didn't get. My friend and I had gone here for the first time for a birthday party upstairs and everything was going fine, no complaints, even with the long waiting times at the bar probably due to being understaffed. Anyway, when I very politely ordered my food before the kitchen closed (we'd already made sure to ask when this was to be in time) the staff member started complaining that I should've given my order in a different way as I'd made it more complicated: for 2 burgers and chips, I struggle to see how that was so complicated but it was either the colour of my skin or my accent being from Liverpool that riled this man up. I immediately voiced my disagreement and told him that his agressive behaviour was extremely rude and completely uncalled for given how polite and respectful my friend and I had been up until this point. Seeing that he was only going to argue with me until I got thrown out, I left it and got our food refunded. Said deputy manager could do with retraining in customer service or redirect his agression to those that deserve it. Safe to say, I, my friend and her friends will never be going back here. What a shame, such unprofessionalism in such a nice...

The food was disappointing. We ordered the Fish & Chips, and the loaded pulled beef style fries - it took around 25mins for the food to arrive which would have been okay if they came to the table fresh.... The loaded fries (£9) ended up becoming one solid piece glued together with cheese as though it was sitting aside for a while & lukewarm (pic attached). The fish & chips seemed overcooked. The fish was over fried on one side and piping hot vs the colder fries on the plate. The menu said "skin on fries" but they were just freezer McDonald's style fries. It was not a classic pub style meal at all - and definitely not worth the £15. The service from the guy at the bar was great and apologized but we had already pre-paid at the bar.

Food was really good, served quickly (there was no-one else eating though), the ladies behind the bar were great, the first barman (and that's being generous) needs sacking frankly. Couldn't pull a pint, offered the non-drinker a pint of soda stained with the tail end of the coke syrup and said "try it anyway", beer was sour, 3 of the lines were down and the entire place was cold, somehow all the tables were booked though. No idea what they served them. Genuinely decent and interesting pub let down by 1 poor staff member and a lack of stock (bearing in mind this was a Saturday night with the Rugby World Cup final on).
