I recently had the pleasure of dining at Tamarind Kitchen, a restaurant located near the beautiful Oxford Street, just a short 7-minute walk from the Oxford Street Station. The ambience of the restaurant is truly inviting and sets the stage for a memorable dining experience.

The service at Tamarind Kitchen is impeccable, with the staff going above and beyond to ensure that every guest feels taken care of. However, it is worth noting that the prices at this establishment are on the higher side. While the quality of the food justifies the cost, it may not be the ideal option for those on a tight budget.

Speaking of the food, it was nothing short of brilliant. The dishes were not only authentic but also managed to capture the true essence and flavors of India. It is evident that the chefs at Tamarind Kitchen have a deep understanding of Indian cuisine and are dedicated to providing their guests with an exceptional culinary experience.

However, I must deduct one star from my review due to a small hiccup in the form of an erroneous wine order on our bill. We were served a bottle of wine that we had not ordered. Thankfully, upon bringing this to the attention of the restaurant staff, they promptly rectified the mistake and adjusted the bill accordingly. It is worth mentioning that had we not checked the bill, we would have unknowingly paid for something we did not order. While the restaurant was quick to acknowledge the mistake and make it right, it is still a factor that should be considered.

Despite this minor issue, I would still highly recommend visiting Tamarind Kitchen if you are looking for a first-class dining experience. The combination of the beautiful ambience, impeccable service, and brilliant and authentic Indian cuisine make it a standout restaurant...

The food was delicious and service was prompt. Poor kitchen hygiene however.

I’m assuming it was either the owner or the manager who left a bad taste in my mouth tonight. I notified them that I found a grey curly hair in our butter chicken and gave it to him on my fork. I said that I did not want a replacement or refund but thought he should know as it’s something other customers may raise concerns about. He returned with the hair on a plate and claims it was a ginger hair from fresh ginger they use.

  1. I’m a nurse, I definitely know what a hair looks like
  2. It was grey and curly, ginger “hair” (assuming he meant it was ginger fibre) is much thicker and certainly not curly or grey

When it came time for the bill, the waiter brought it over and we went through it to make sure everything was charged correctly. We found the restaurant had added a $9.88 (pounds) charge for ‘discretionary services’.

When asked what this was for the best Owner/Manager said it was something collected as an optional from all customers and it is split amongst service staff, cooks and cleaners.

Firstly - 9.88 pounds is nearly $20 for us when converted to our home currency (Australia). Secondly, if it is an optional expense then it should not be added to the bill without confirming if it is okay with the customer first. If it’s to pay your staff more then pay them a living wage instead of passing the cost onto your customers. Our money is hard earnt too.

They have clearly charged this fee from other customers and I’m doubtful that everyone is aware it is being charged. I suggest you check your bill after your meal.

I doubt this review will effect their approach to customer service, but I feel like it’s something I needed to get off my chest. I hope they...

Went there on a double date. Booked in advance to be safe. Had to wait for 10-15 mins as the table was occupied.. It's in a nice area. The ambience was good, the place is cozy.

We chose cocktails without alcohol. All of them were great. The lychee one was fruity. The best was the cucumber based drink, khush cooler, which was very refreshing. The one with bay leaf was stronger taste compared to the others. One of us haf mango lassi, which was alright. For food, we went for veg and normal tasting menus. The raj kachoris were the best part of the whole menu. Perfect Chaat taste with the right balance of taste and texture. They were right size for a bite. The sheekh kabab had Malai filling which was good because otherwise the outer layer of it was a little too dry. I am a huge fan of pav bhaji, so I have high expectations. Here the bhaji was a little bland, pav was ok but burnt on the edges. The paneer was so soft, it melted in the mouth. It was a little too tangy, probably because of the curd. The biryani was alright, the taste was not uniform across. I have had better Biryanis in London. The palak/spinach was quite juicy and rich. Perfect with the roti/naan. The dal was a little different, it had a south Indian touch to the flavour. I prefer dal with the uniform consistency, this one had distinct liquid part and solid part. The taste eas good though. By the time the deserts came, most of us were full. The mango kulfi was mild but the gulab jamun was quite tasty and had a good bite. They were warm as well so a good finish to a rest meal. The service was ok, nothing so good or bad that I would remember it. Overall, we enjoyed the food and would definitely recommend to friends...

3.5 actually. Half star for lovely Zara, Orshi and Pruthvick for serving us. This was the first time I tried and Indian restaurant in London cause eating and living in that country past so many years, I was sceptical about my Indian food experience here. What worked for me: Papdi chaat- must have!!! 9£ Avocado & Mango salad- must have!!! 8£ Vegetable Biryani- Good! 18£ What didn’t work: Paneer Tikka- 9£ nothing like the original. The paneer is supposed to have a melt in your mouth texture but was in return very chewy and bland. Usually tikkas are grilled with vegetables like onions and charged peppers to enhance the flavour, but we just received 2 pcs of Paneer. Some may argue that it has been adapted to the flavours accepted in UK but I must say how much ever you adapt the dish shouldnt compromise on it’s origin and authencity. Everything you do to adapt can never take away from the base you started. Cucumber Raita: 4£ They charged for a tiny bowl of extra raita which was not communicated to us before that is a chargeable item. This is where Communication is key: it will be nice if you inform your customers in advance as this extra charge was no where mentioned in the menu and the server said sure we can give you extra helping but skipped the chargeable part so please you as a customer ask them, if they forget. Overall: Do give it a try! The staff was kind and food has a little bit of India in it. Do not go with the prices mentioned on Google as I believe it’s an old menu. The place is expensive for the quantity. I know it is in Soho, and you can charge a particular price that is fine but Atleast offer food/ experience worth that price.

Wow, I had no idea this place existed. I came across it by chance, read the reviews and one said "Better than Dishoom." Well, I love Dishoom so immediately booked into Tamarind Soho, which still maintains its Michelin star. We had the set lunch menu for £50 plus a bottle of still water, one cocktail and one beer. Total for two including service £142. Dishes were: - Raj Kachori: an explosion of flavours. Yoghurt taste, a hint of spice and the crunchy topping made it the best dish of all for texture and sensation. Incredible. - Smoked Spicy Chicken Tikka and Tandoori Lamb Seekh Kebab wit pickled papaya & smoked pepper chutney: both meats melted in the mouth. The chicken soaked up the flavour of its marinade and just pipped the lamb to the taste post. - Old Delhi Butter Chicken with a rich caramelised tomato sauce and dried fenugreek: sublime texture, rich flavour and we could not stop eating the sauce. Had to order more naan! - Lasooni Palak - garlic tempered spinach: I have never had this before and could not stop eating it. I'm not sure how they served it but it was way better than sag paneer which was previously my favourite Indian spinach dish. - Koala Jamun - Indian sweet. Normally I find Indian sweets too...sweet. Man, they love their sugar on that continent! But this one had a hint of sweet that rounded off the other dishes brilliant. It got finished like everything else. Decor was fantastic. Quiet atmosphere. Precise and non-intrusive service. I can't recommend this restaurant enough and will return.
