🚇 Pimlico 🍺 £6.30 Mahou
The Royal Oak is located at the southern end of Westminster close to the much loved Regency Cafe and the architecturally unique Grosvenor Estate, Channel 4 HQ is also close by. The nearest Tube is Pimlico.
This pub was established in 1831 and rebuilt in 1872. This pub is built in a unique shape which is governed by the road layout around pub. The pub was saved from demolition following a campaign by local residents.
This is a small one bar pub which is set out in an “L” shape. The servery is traditional and illuminated by modern pendants, the back bar is simple but stylish. The seating is mostly high level with a couple of banquettes to perch on. The pub is bright and airy as there are windows on three sides. A nice feature is a wall covered in pop and rock album covers featuring artists from The Happy Mondays to Adele.
The beer choice offers a selection of familiar brews, continental lagers, Camden’s Stout which was new and two cask ales. I opted for a pint of Mahou, my pint was great, price point was a tad above average. The food menu consists of comfort food options and pub classics, Fish & Chips costs £17.
I arrived around 4pm on a showery Thursday afternoon in March. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed with two separate groups and a few solo imbiber’s in attendance. This pub does get very busy with an afterwork crowd from the nearby offices. The service was pleasant, the team member who served me was welcoming and courteous.
Visiting The Royal Oak was a pleasant experience, this pub is worth a look if you’re in the area.

Read moreWent here for lunch on a gourmet society card which is 50%off. We were told the steak and lamshank weren’t included in the offer and there weren’t that many dishes on the menu. The food came quickly and the lady behind the bar was, polite and efficient. It was literally one of the worst meals we have both had in many years. The steak and ale pie was the size of a pork pie (tiny), the gravy was a gelatinous blob that was too salty to eat... on the other plate there were 3.5 large boned ribs with very little meat. The coleslaw was inedible and I suspect off. The barbecue and honey sauce on the ribs was quite spicey ( not expected as we dont like spicy food ). The chips were nice however and the bar person was very apologetic and did discount the drinks from the bill. It may have been a random experience and so different from the really nice meal we had at the owners other pub. What a disappointment, but couldn’t fault the service from the...
Read moreA good place to grab a meal and a drink in Westminster. They handled a group of 12 of us with friendliness and ease that sadly isn’t common.
The outside of the pub looks traditional but the inside is funky in a good/modern way. There’s a lot to look at but it doesn’t overwhelm you or get in the way.
A good selection of drinks with about 10 taps so you’ll find something you want quickly. As a relatively small venue it’s unlikely the queues will be long.
Food is -as they say on the tin- traditional pub fare. It all looked pretty good and tasted ok. The sauces (ketchup and mayo) come in fancy-looking packets and added a touch of class to the experience.
Not the cheapest but great for a casual bite with friends or colleagues. The tables are also big enough to eat on and the bench seating along the outside comfy with bar stools and high...
