🚇 Island Gardens 🍺 £6.80 Pravha
The Ship is located close to the river at the southern end of the Isle of Dogs in East London. The nearest station is Island Gardens on the DLR.
The pub was built in the 1930’s for Watney’s and superseded the previous Victorian pub which was built in the mid-19th century. I love the architecture of this pub, especially the oxblood tiles.
This is a one bar pub that is traditionally decorated with a cosy comfortable feel. The servery is the original interwar instalment and has a wonderful backlit back bar. Around the dark green walls are a number of historical photographs depicting this part of London’s industrious past. There is plenty of comfy seating throughout which is sat atop a proper pub carpet. To the side of the pub is partially covered smoking area.
The beer selection will please most with a line up of familiar brews to choose from, cask ales weren’t being served when we visited. I decided on a pint of Pravha, my pint was great, price point was quite high for this lager. The food menu is Stonebaked Pizza, there are 12 different options available, most pizzas cost £11, the reviews are very favourable.
We arrived just after 3pm on an overcast Saturday afternoon in October. I visited with my Brother and local Islander and fellow pub enthusiast @booze_house_tales . The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed with a few locals in for an afternoon drink. The service was excellent, the chap who served us was welcoming and courteous, he did make us laugh by winding up a regular by playing the theme tune to “Never Ending Story” on repeat.
@theshipinne14 is a lovely local boozer that we thoroughly enjoyed visiting. The cosy local atmosphere, the relaxed and welcoming setting and the friendly hospitality made for a pleasant stop on our tour of the island.

Read moreThe staff are very very nice. James, the Gentleman who checked me in, really tried his best to help me out when somethings werent very well. He was very patient and understanding and very much willing to help. He was very much willing to carry my heavy bag all the way to the second floor, on narrow staircase. Also the nice lady i met the next morning, helped me with very good tips and advise. Thx to them, my stay was abit better.||||The room was tidy, there were snacks and a coffee machine, and an iron with an iron board. ||||I think for a day stay, its not drastically bad.||||||But, The heating in the room had a malfunction. The manager wasn’t reachable to be asked about how to handle it. ||||During the booking processes, i asked specifically if there was a Lift, if i would stay on the higher floor, as i have a heavy bag and i do have knee problems. I wasn’t told that there wasn’t a lift, until i saw the poor receptionist looking terrified having to carry my bag all the way up. I dd offer to help him with it as its inhumane that he carries it all the way up on his own. In all cases there wasnt any rooms on the lower floor. If i would have been told so, i would have chosen a different hotel because of my limitations.||||Also, despite the bathroom was clean, but it stunk. And the toilet sink was blocked. A bit attention to details, cleanliness and maintenance, would make things better. ||||It’s around 20 mins away from canary...
