Japan Deli — Restaurant in Manchester

I'm upset that I have to give this place one star in order to review it - it doesn't even deserve that.

Placed an order directly through their website (which was a poorly formatted ordeal in and of itself), and was given a delivery time of 50 minutes from point of order. That seemed a little excessive, given it wasn't a particularly large order and we live a ten minute drive from Japan Deli, but that's the way it was.

The 50 minutes passed, and then, after a little while longer, we rang to find out where the food was up to. I was told it was only a couple of minutes away and fobbed off. Another quarter of an hour passes with no delivery, so we ring again. Same story, with no explanation given as to the cause of the delay. This went on until the food eventually did arrive just short of two solid hours after ordering it, and although the delivery driver was extremely apologetic, not once did the restaurant (not that it warrants that term) even attempt to explain why we had to wait so long.

When we eventually sat down to eat the now cold food, it was entirely disappointing. The rice was soggy, rather than sticky; the sauces were about the blandest things I've ever eaten; and the fish was most definitely not fresh enough to serve (my girlfriend and I both spent the night with significant food poisoning).

Japan Deli is an abysmal establishment, with disgusting customer service and an inability to produce food that comes even close to warranting its prices. If you want good Japanese food in Withington, or South Manchester generally, go around the...

We recently visited Japan Deli on Wilmslow Road. While the food was just "okay" and could benefit from some improvements in terms of flavor, the service was absolutely excellent! The staff were attentive and made the whole experience pleasant. However, the drinks in the chiller were not as cold as expected, which was a minor disappointment.

What we did enjoy was the option of sitting outside. There’s a nice outdoor seating area with tables and chairs where you can relax and enjoy your meal or drinks.

Japan Deli has a lot of potential. Their dedication to authentic Japanese sushi is clear, and the attention to detail in their preparation is appreciated. Me and my wife are asian tourists to Manchester. We're very happy to have found this spot. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food came at a reasonable time and the prices were very affordable which is a big plus to us after having explored a bit and seeing how expensive everything is.

We were just in Japan the week before so I wouldn't say the katsu we had was necessarily absolutely 100% authentic, but it was definitely pretty authentic and suuuper delicious and had the correct essence. And it's dam sure really well made for a place so far from Japan.

10/10 we will probably be making this our go-to place during our stay here.
