We have been going to Delilah for a number of years and have been delighted with the experience until TODAY!! We decided to take our son and fiancé there for lunch and waited at the bottom of the stairs where the sign reads 'please wait here to be seated' which we did. A man who was serving at the till asked how many would be eating and we said 4 - he very promptly said "that's fine, it will be a 15 minute wait" to which we hesitated but then said that should be fine as we could browse the shop. The last time we ate there, someone came from the upstairs, met us, greeted us and seated us. Again this time, a man suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs and greeted us - we explained there were four of us and he was about to reply when the man at the till said very abruptly "he's not going to say anything different to me, it's 15 minutes wait, do you want a table or not? (!!)". By now, he had a small board in his hand and had started to write on it. We guessed he was the person taking bookings for the café but at no point had he explained this to us. We were so taken aback by his rudeness and confused by their seating system that we just stared in shock at this man's arrogance and manners. I quietly said" yes, please that's fine" and we went to browse the shop when he threw his board under the counter very aggressively and turned away from us without another word. My husband said he didn't want us to eat their after such rudeness and explained to the till man that we were leaving and we wouldn't need the table. We explained that it was very unpleasant how he had spoken to us and my son even interjected that he was very rude in the way he had spoken to me. The till man said that he didn't care and we could write whatever reviews we wanted. I asked if we could speak with the Manager as we felt it important to make him/her aware of the whole event to which he replied he was the Manager and the owner!! We have since looked on their website and it would appear that this man, Nik, isn't the owner but the Operations Director so we will be contacting the owners directly instead to inform them of his behaviour. So, please watch out for Nik on the till..... He's...
Read moreI've been to Delilah's twice now. The first time I had a really excellent veggie breakfast and the setting is lovely, so I thought it would be an ideal place to catch up with another friend over lunch.
Staff were very helpful with dietary requirements and on paper the 'afternoon cheese' sounded delightful. However what we actually received was just super disappointing. The scones for example were tiny, about the diameter of a 50p coin, perhaps slightly bigger. I would have expected at least the savoury scones to be full sized. I have attached a photo of the afternoon cheese before we touched it so that you can appreciate just how stingy it was for £40, for the portion size £25 would have been more appropriate but I still would have been disappointed to leave hungry. You can't see the tiny thin crackers, the meat or the little pot of chutney we got due to the angle but they were equally disappointing in portion size. Would have preferred to still pay £40 and honestly get twice as much food. The food was tasty.
I'll probably give Delilah's one more go as this may just have been a bad day. If you're not going in to actually eat there, the delicatessen is worth a...
Read moreI've previously rated this 4 stars. However, I've had a couple of poor experiences recently on the deli side, predominantly with staff being pushy & unpleasant.
Particularly frustrating was being really heavily pushed a cheese without being allowed to taste it first ('we were letting people taste it all day, but you can't'), which gave the distinct impression they were trying to shift an item close to its sell by date. Whilst I could understand this in a supermarket, I expect better from a deli that prides (and prices) itself on the alleged quality of its produce.
Such experiences make one less willing to overlook other faults like the lighting (seriously bad, I mean why the harsh white LEDs upstairs?) and overly cluttered shop floor (the 80s gift shop vibe mentioned by another reviewer is entirely on the money).
The wine selection is still interesting and worth popping in for, but there are better and friendlier shops for the...
